The invention concerns single and multiple cell lithium ion batteries. Embodiments of the invention concern single and multiple cell lithium ion batteries with built-in controllers that monitor the cell or cells and provide a safety disconnect when certain monitored conditions are detected by the controller. Preferred embodiment single and multiple cell lithium ion batteries have their cell or cells within a container having a positive terminal and a negative terminal. The built-in controller monitors the cell or cell for each of the following conditions: over temperature, short-circuit, overcharge, and over-discharge and the controller provides a safety disconnect when one of the monitored conditions exist. A multiple cell lithium ion battery of embodiments of the invention include a built-in controller that monitors the temperature of the cells and provides a safety disconnect that electronically disconnects all of the cells when at least one of the cells exceeds a predetermined temperature, or a controller that monitors the state of charge of each of the cells and individually controls the charge cycle of each of the cells, or a controller that monitors the temperature of the cells and to provides a safety disconnect when at least one of the cells exceeds a predetermined temperature.

The active voltage management device comprises: a pair of input terminals adapted to be connected to the energy storage device; a reverse polarity protection circuit coupled to the pair of input terminals; a voltage comparator circuit adapted to compare a second voltage associated with the voltage level of the energy storage device to a reference voltage and to provide an output based upon the comparison of the second voltage to the reference voltage; and a transistor adapted to operate in a linear mode to dissipate energy from the energy storage device at a substantially constant current level, wherein output of the voltage comparator circuit is adapted to activate the transistor when the second voltage is greater than or equal to the reference voltage. The method comprises: receiving an input voltage from the energy storage device; providing reverse polarity protection from the energy storage device; comparing the a second voltage associated with the input voltage from the energy storage device to a reference voltage; and conducting a transistor in a linear mode to dissipate energy from the energy storage device at a substantially constant current level when the second voltage is greater than or equal to the reference voltage.

Methods and systems for delivering electromagnetic energy to a patient's tissue with an attendant reduction in the pain experienced by the patient due to tissue heating. Electromagnetic energy is delivered from an electrode through a skin surface to heat a first region of tissue beneath the skin surface and a second region of the tissue between the first region and the skin surface. During the delivery of the electromagnetic energy, a temperature of the second region of the tissue is caused to oscillate between at least one maximum temperature and at least one minimum temperature. The temperature oscillation may be induced by a timed sequence of cryogen pulses delivered to the electrode, which in turn extracts thermal energy out of the second region of tissue through the contacting skin surface.

A sensor assembly for sensors such as microfabricated resonant sensors is disclosed. The disclosed assembly provides improved performance of the sensors by providing a thermally insensitive environment and short pathways for signals to travel to processing components. Further, the assembly provide modular construction for the sensors and housing modules, thereby allowing replacement of the sensors at a lower cost. The assembly includes a sensor module including a sensor formed on a conductive substrate with a cavity formed on one surface. The substrate has conductive vias extending from the cavity to a second surface of the substrate. A housing assembly accommodates the sensor and includes a rigid housing, preferably made from a ceramic. An electronic component, such as an amplifier, is mounted on the rigid housing. The electronic component electrically engages the vias substantially at the second surface of the substrate. The electronic component receive signals from the sensor through the vias. The signals are then processed through an amplifier and a digital signal processor using a modified periodogram.
