Abstract: An injection molded product formed from an inner layer, or substrate, to which an aesthetic IMD layer is bonded during a first injection molding process, leaving a portion of the substrate exposed about the perimeter(s) of the substrate. A transparent outer layer, or overmold, is then injection molded over the top of the IMD layer and substrate, bonding substantially to the IMD layer and to the substrate where it remains exposed following the first injection molding. The process of forming a product through the disclosed two-step injection molding process creates a customizable, aesthetic product with an aesthetic IMD layer completely encapsulated between the substrate and a clear overmold in such a way to protect the IMD layer from the environment in which the product is used.

Abstract: A process for making a multi-component hollow housing comprises injecting a first plastic material into a first mold cavity and causing it to solidify to form a first component, whereby the first plastic material shrinks lengthwise; injecting a second plastic material into a second mold cavity having the first component transferred thereto and causing the second plastic component to solidify to form a second component, the second component comprising a tolerance-elimination element that is longitudinally attached to the first component at one of the ends thereof, wherein a length of the shrunk first component is at least ten times greater than a length of the tolerance-elimination element, and wherein an absolute lengthwise shrinkage of the second plastic material forming the tolerance-elimination element is at least ten times smaller than the lengthwise shrinkage of the first plastic material; at least partially overmolding an intermediate part comprising the first and second component with a third plastic material in a third mold cavity, thereby forming the multi-component housing in which the tolerance-elimination element is at least partially overmolded by the third plastic material, and wherein the third plastic material forms at least a portion of an outer surface of the multi-component housing; and removing the multi-component housing from the core.

The injected molds include a mold cavity and an injection molding conduit having a first end, a second end defining an outlet in fluid communication with the mold cavity, a first interior transverse dimension that is perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the injection molding conduit, a second interior transverse dimension that is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and to the first interior transverse dimension, and at the second end, the second interior transverse dimension is at least three times larger than the first interior transverse dimension, and the second interior transverse dimension of the injection molding conduit is substantially aligned with a thickness of a portion of the mold cavity that is adjacent to the outlet of the injection molding conduit.

Abstract: An oral care implement having a multi-component handle. The oral care implement may include a head and a handle. The handle may include a transparent component and an opaque component. The transparent component may have a front surface, a rear surface opposite the front surface, a first lateral surface, and a second lateral surface opposite the first lateral surface. The opaque component may at least partially cover the front and rear surfaces of the transparent component while leaving the first and second lateral surfaces of the transparent component exposed. Thus, the transparent component may form a window through the lateral surfaces of the handle.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a chrome plated component can include performing a two-shot (2K) molding process to form a component comprising first and second \members. A non-plateable resin can be molded to form the first member defining a front surface that defines a recess. A plateable resin can be molded to form the second member defining a back surface that defines the protrusion. The component can then be removed from its mold, where (i) an exposed surface of the second member defines a front surface of the component and (ii) the recess receives the protrusion such that the front surface of the first member is substantially flush with the back surface of the second member. An exposed surface of the second member can then be chrome plated to obtain the chrome plated component.

Abstract: The lens is made by injection molding in a mold through the injection of molten plastic material in at least three injection shots using a multistep process. It includes a first outer lens part, a second outer lens part and a lens core part forming an interior of the lens. The lens core part is embedded between the first and second outer lens parts. The lens core part is divided into at least two subparts separated at least partially by at least one elongated slot extending across the lens core part between the first and second surfaces of the lens core part. The slot or slots made through the lens core part are filled and fused with the plastic material of the first outer lens part.
