There is a problem with existing credit cards in that the forgers can change the embossed information. This problem is overcome by providing in registration with the embossed information a layer of chemicals reactive under the pressure of a change in the embossed information to release a colored dye.

The reporter element (3) may take a number of different forms, such as a light emitting device which lights up or undergoes colour change when activated by the source of electrical potential to provide an indication of authenticity. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the flexible security document is a banknote and the source of electrical potential is applied by printing.

Articles in the form of multilayered cards which contain information invisibly printed between a support member and a top member. By rubbing the exposed surface of either the support member or the top member, the information is developed into visible information which can be viewed either through one of the members, i.e., when one of the members is composed of a transparent material, or by physical separation of the members. The multilayered cards are structured similarly to multilayered carbonless copy papers. The information is protected from premature, unauthorized development and detection due to the fact that development thereof creates a chemical change in the multilayered card which cannot be reversed.

The authentication device includes: a piezoelectric material layer for generating an electric field in response to mechanical stress; and an optically responsive layer directly attached to the piezoelectric material layer, the attached layers being absent a direct electrical connection, the optically responsive layer being operable between a first state and a second state having different ocular perceptions. In a particular embodiment, the particles are optically variable pigment flakes, oriented in a position which is substantially different from an alignment in the plane of the film or coating layer.
