Abstract:
Herein is described a method for the manufacture of a charge director comprising a barium salt. The method comprises reacting barium alkoxide with an acid in a reaction medium comprising ethanol, and separating ethanol from the reaction mixture to recover the barium salt produced.
Abstract:
Vanadium oxytrihalide (e.g., VOCl.sub.3) is reacted with alkali metal alkoxide (e.g., NaOEt) in the presence of a diluent (e.g., EtOH) that boils below the boiling point of the organic vanadate being produced. The diluent is then distilled from the reaction mixture and thereafter the organic vanadate is distilled from a suspension of the reaction products in an inert liquid hydrocarbon (e.g., mineral oil) that boils above the boiling point of the organic vanadate produced. This higher boiling hydrocarbon is preferably added to the reaction mixture after the diluent has been distilled off. The process avoids hydrogen halide evolution and consequent need for gaseous ammonia. Solvent extractions are not required, the process may be conducted in a single reactor, and the products are readily formed in high yields.
Abstract:
A method for the preparation of alkoxyalanates of alkaline earth metals is disclosed, which comprises the step of reacting an alcoholate of an alkaline earth metal and an alkaline earth metal alanate and an aluminum alcoholate, the reaction being of the additive type. The products thus obtained are effective catalysts for reactions of reduction, more particularly of hydrogenation of a number of organic compounds.
Abstract:
A method of synthesising gallium or indium alkoxide from the corresponding gallium or indium halide, the method comprising the step of reacting the gallium or indium metal halide with the alkoxide of an alkali earth metal, to produce the desired metal alkoxide essentially free of chlorine contamination. The method provides a composition comprising a solution of gallium or indium alkoxide of high purity, the composition having a chloride content of less than 30 ppm, a barium or strontium content of less than 30 ppm, and a sodium or potassium content of less than 30 ppm, without requiring any additional steps.
Abstract:
DOUBLE METAL ALKOXIDES OF THE FORMULA M(AI(OR)4)2 ARE CONVERTED BY PYROLYSIS, OR HYDROLYSIS AND PYROLYSIS, TO ULTRA-PURE COMPOUNDS CORESSPONDING TO THE FORMULA MAI2O4 WHEREIN M IS MAGNESIUM OR CALCIUM AND R IS AN ALKYL GROUP CONTAINING FROM 1 TO 7 CARBON ATOMS.
Abstract:
Tetravalent titanium alcoholate-beta diketone complexes, e.g. titanium isopropylate-triacetylacetonate, are reacted with an alkali metal amalgam in a non-polar solvent to reduce the titanium to trivalent state, forming, for example, titanium triacetylacetonate and sodium isopropylate. The sodium isopropylate is a crystalline precipitate which can be removed by filtration; the amalgam can be decanted off and reused, as in alkali metal chloride electrolysis, to restore its alkali metal content so as to be ready for re-cycling.
