A process for improving the wet strength of paper or paperboard is disclosed, and compositions, methods, and products related to improved wet strength paper or paperboard are provided. The process includes, for example, contacting at least one side of the paper or paperboard with water or an aqueous composition to wet the paper or paperboard, contacting the wet paper or paperboard with a wet strength resin composition followed by drying the paper or paperboard. The resulted treated or coated paper or paperboard has comparable wet strength properties to that of paper or paperboard containing wet strength resin from a conventional wet end application.

A resin-impregnated sheet material is manufactured by passing a sheet material through a vacuum space of a reduced pressure sufficiently different from ambient atmospheric pressure for sufficiently deaerating the sheet material at the vacuum space, and impregnating the thus deaerated sheet material with a resin varnish while utilizing the pressure difference between the atmosphere and the vacuum space, the sufficiently deaerated sheet material being impregnated quickly and reliably with the resin varnish to provide the resin-impregnated sheet material of high quality.

A process for producing a heat-sensitive recording paper is disclosed. The process involves pretreating base paper by a high-frequency corona discharge. The base paper treated in this manner can be utilized in producing a heat-sensitive recording material by providing a heat-sensitive layer thereon. By subjecting the base paper to the high-frequency corona discharge treatment the base paper can be uniformly coated with a heat-sensitive recording material without leaving any blank spaces thereon.
