摘要： A system for transmitting voice messages from a caller location to a receiver location using a plurality of computers each coupled to another through a network such as the Internet. The system also has a plurality of handheld portable recording-delivery devices which are coupled to the network. Each handheld portable recording-delivery device can convert voice input into digital data for transmission through the network. Destination information for the digital data being transmitted is generated using speech recognition of voice input.

The voice messages may be transcoded as necessary. the server then may determine the status of the voice message in the voice messaging systems of the recipients and may update the message status in the sender's and the recipients' voice message systems accordingly.

A cable modem/multimedia terminal adapter employing voice over internet protocol (VoIP) can be configured to provide access to emergency services during periods of unavailability of a connection to a network due to software upgrades of the cable modem/multimedia terminal adapter or a VoIP handset, a power outage or a malfunction of the cable modem/multi-media terminal adapter or the VoIP handset. Access to emergency services can be provided through the use of a dedicated button on the cable modem/multimedia terminal adapter and the use of dedicated hardware in the cable modem/multimedia terminal adapter that is configured to initiate operation when a connection to the network is unavailable.

摘要： An audio conferencing facility has a database for storing user data relating to authorisation to use the facility, and provides storage for a name file to be stored as part of the user data, which may be retrieved for generation of an audio signal to be played to one or more of the participants to a communication connection whenever that participant uses the conferencing facility. The name may be generated as an audio recording by the user, or entered as text, or retrieved from a directory in text form. It may be stored either in audio form or as text, for conversion to audio using a speech synthesiser.The name file may be played to the user on accessing the system, and/or to other participants when he joins or leaves a conference. By storing the name file for re-use in many conferences, the access to each conference is simplified. It also allows listeners-in to conferences to be announced in circumstances where speaking may be difficult because of background noise, speech impairment etc.

摘要： The present invention provides flexible call processing. In one embodiment, a first call from a calling party intended for a called party is received at a call processing system. The call processing system places a second call to a telephonic device associated with the called party. The calling party and called party communicate via the first and second calls. A determination is made that the first call has been terminated. A call-back instruction is received from the called party while the second call is still in place. At least partly in response to receiving the call-back instruction, a third call is placed to a terminal associated with the calling party. The calling party and the called party can communicate via the second call and the third call.

The calls of the first type are originally intended for the network device. The voice mail module also provides voice mail functionality for calls of a second type directed to the network device. The calls of the second type are originally intended for one or more other network devices in respect of which the network device has been designated as a backup. In a system having such network devices, voice mail functionality may be provided locally at the network devices. The network devices may be implemented as telephones. In the event that a network device is no longer available on the network, another network device designated as a backup network device takes voice mail messages for the network device that is unavailable. This significantly improves overall system reliability and availability.
