In one embodiment, one or more of R, Rnull or Rnull is a biologically active substance. Amorphous compositions containing a biologically active substance, in addition to the polymer, and methods for controllably releasing biologically active substances using the compositions, are also described.

Disclosed herein is a method for implanting cells onto a prosthesis, including the steps of: (a) providing a prosthesis including a porous tube, where at least 25% of the pores on the inner surface of the tube have diameters of more than about 40 nullm, at least 25% of the pores on the outer surface of the tube have diameters of less than about 30 nullm, and the tube includes a substantially continuous layer of a biocompatible material; (b) contacting the prosthesis with a suspension of cells; and (c) providing a pressure differential between the inner surface and the outer surface, whereby the cells are retained in the pores of the inner surface. Also disclosed herein are methods for culturing cells for implantation.

The present invention provides medical devices such as medication infusion pumps having internal surfaces that are treated to inhibit protein denaturation. In accordance with the invention, hydrophilic internal surfaces and related coating methods are provided to reduce or eliminate accumulation of medication deposits which can otherwise occur when handling complex protein-based medications. Preferred hydrophilic pump surfaces include hydrophilic surfactants (PEO) or (PEG) coatings which exhibit very low protein adsorption characteristics. Several methods are disclosed for producing such treated surfaces including the covalent attachment of hydrophilic surfactants.

The present invention relates to a collagen material comprising a laminate in which a collagen ultra-fine fibrous non-woven fabric-like multi-layer structure is sandwiched between non-fibrous collagen layers, a thread-like material containing said collagen material, their production processes, and a medical material containing said collagen material, and particularly a medical alternative membrane comprised of said medical material. These use collagen for their raw material without combining the use of a synthetic polymer material, possess physical properties to an extent that allows suturing while still maintaining the biochemical properties inherently possessed by collagen, and the alternative medical membrane can be used as a material for filling in the missing portions of biomembranes such as endocranium, pericardium, pleura, peritonium or serous membrane, presents no ethical problems, is in stable supply, has no risk of infection, does not cause cell degeneration, allows control of the rate of degradation following application to the body, and has an action that promotes regeneration of biomembranes.

The present invention relates to the discovery that biocompatible anionic polymers can effectively inhibit fibrosis, scar formation, and surgical adhesions. The invention is predicated on the discovery that anionic polymers effectively inhibit invasion of cells associated with detrimental healing processes, and in particular, that the effectiveness of an anionic polymer at inhibiting cell invasion correlates with the anionic charge density of the polymer. Thus the present invention provides a large number of materials for use in methods of inhibiting fibrosis and fibroblast invasion. Anionic polymers for use in the invention include but are not limited to natural proteoglycans, and the glycosaminoglycan moieties of proteoglycans. Additionally, anionic carbohydrates and other anionic polymers may be used. The anionic polymers dextran sulfate and pentosan polysulfate are preferred. In a more preferred embodiment, dextran sulfate, in which the sulfur content is greater than about 10% by weight, may be used. In a more preferred embodiment, the average molecular weight is about 40,000 to 500,000 Daltons. The present invention provides compositions and methods to inhibit fibrosis and scarring associated with surgery. The invention further provides compositions and methods to inhibit glial cell invasion, detrimental bone growth and neurite outgrowth. In a preferred embodiment, the inhibitory compositions further comprise an adhesive protein.
