An object of the present invention is to provide a biaxially oriented high quality polyester film excellent in thermal dimensional stability and clarity and also excellent in productivity, and also to provide a production process thereof. Another object is to provide a biaxially oriented polyester film greatly improved in the practical properties respected in various applications of the polyester film, such as the recording track shift in magnetic recording tape application, curling in magnetic recording card application, dimensional change during process in printing plate application, printing shift in ribbon application, thermostability in capacitor application, and perforation sensitivity and low temperature curling in heat-sensitive mimeograph stencil application. The objects of the present invention can be achieved by a biaxially oriented polyester film, comprising a polyester (A) mainly composed of ethylene terephthalate and a polyether imide (B), having a single glass transition temperature, and having a refractive index of 1.60 to 1.80 at least in either the machine direction or the transverse direction.

Toughened biaxially oriented polyamide films prepared by dry blending i) a polyamide homopolymer, copolymer, or blends thereof; and ii) a functionalized polyolefin terpolymer comprising maleic anhydride, ethyl acrylate, and an olefin, to thereby form a dry mixture. The dry mixture is melted to form a polymer blend, which is then formed into a polymer film. The edges of the film are pinned to a casting roll, and the film is plasticized in at least one water bath. The polymer film is subsequently biaxially oriented. The result is a toughened biaxially oriented film which is resistant to pinholes, cracks, and other structural defects. Such films are particularly suited for making packaging materials for various food products.

The invention relates to a transparent, biaxially oriented polyester film with a base layer B which is composed of at least 80% by weight of a thermoplastic polyester, and with at least one outer layer A. Another polymeric layer made from a copolymer crosslinked using an acrylic and/or methacrylic compound, has been applied to that side of the film opposite to the outer layer A. The film has low oxygen transmission and exhibits very good adhesion between the respective layers. The coated film moveover has low coefficient of friction, excellent windability, and excellent antistatic performance. It is particularly suitable for packaging purposes, specifically for packaging foodstuffs or other consumable items. The invention further relates to a process for the production of the film.

The present invention is directed to a process for producing a biaxially oriented polyester film which comprises: subjecting a polyester film to simultaneous biaxial stretching in a stretching apparatus constructed to simultaneously stretch the film in the lengthwise and widthwise directions thereof: and subsequently subjecting the film to successive biaxial stretching in the lengthwise and widthwise directions thereof in the same apparatus as mentioned above. With this process, a film can be efficiently formed, without film breaking, which film is small in thickness and greatly strong in its lengthwise and widthwise directions.

A method for controlling the width of a polyester film support comprising, in order, the steps of: (a) extruding a polyester resin using one or more extruders; (b) casting the resin on a casting wheel to form a polyester sheet; (c) stretching the polyester sheet along the machine direction by ratios of 3 to 5 times at temperatures ranging from above the glass transition temperature to below the thermal crystallization temperature, wherein the machine contains extended edge rollers (14) in the drafter at the point where stretching occurs; (d) stretching the polyester sheet along the transverse direction by ratios of 3 to 5 times at temperatures ranging from above the glass transition temperature to below the thermal crystallization temperature; and (e) heat setting the polyester sheet at temperatures ranging from 180 to 250null C.
