Compositions suitable for reversibly storing heat in thermal energy systems (TES) include a salt hydrate represented by the formula: MXq.nH2O. M is a cation selected from Groups 1 to 14 of the IUPAC Periodic Table, X is a halide of Group 17, q ranges from 1 to 4, and n ranges from 1 to 12. The cation (M) may have an electronegativity of ≤ about 1.8 and a molar mass ≤ about 28 g/mol. The anion (X) may have an electronegativity of ≥ about 2.9 to ≤ about 3.2. A distance between a cation (M) and coordinating water molecules (H2O) is ≤ about 2.1 Å. Thermal energy systems (TES) incorporating such compositions are also provided that are configured to reversibly store heat in the thermal energy system (TES) via an endothermic dehydration reaction and to release heat in in the thermal energy system (TES) via an exothermic hydration reaction.

Manganese tetrafluoride is prepared by a reaction between manganese difluoride or manganese trifluoride particles and elemental fluorine. During the reaction, surfaces of the particles are rendered fresh, e.g. by mechanical impact on the particles. Thereby, also agglomeration, sintering or vitrification of the particles is prevented. The impact is not so intensive that the particles would be crushed.

Disclosed is a process for producing manganese fluoride, comprising a step (1) of allowing a manganese compound such as MnF2 having been dried at a temperature of not lower than 100° C. to react with a fluorinating agent such as F2 at a temperature of 50 to 250° C. and a step (2) of further allowing a product obtained in the step (1) to react with a fluorinating agent at a temperature of 250 to 450° C. According to this process, manganese fluoride capable of generating a fluorine gas can be easily and inexpensively produced on a mass scale under the conditions of low temperature and low pressure without going through steps of sublimation and solidification.

This invention provides an improvement in the process of obtaining metal values from manganiferous iron-containing ore by halidating the ores and separating the metal values from the ore as the halides. This improvement comprises segregating the iron halide from the mixed halides and recycling the iron halide to react with the ore prior to halidating. This process is especially applicable to ocean floor nodule ores and utilizes preferably hydrogen halides or halogens as the halidating agents, in aqueous solutions.
