    摘要: A cathode device including an emitter element for generating electrons. The emitter element can have an outer periphery and a distal tip. The tip can have a first angled surface that angles inwardly from the outer periphery, and a second angled surface that angles inwardly and is separated and inwardly offset from the first angled surface by a shoulder. A graphite cap which can be solid, extends around the emitter element and has an internal angled surface that engages the first angled surface of the tip of the emitter element, forming a gap of a controlled size separating the internal angled surface of the graphite cap from the second angled surface of the tip of the emitter element.

    摘要: A method for fabricating a sharpened needle-like emitter, the method including: electrolytically polishing an end portion of an electrically conductive emitter material so as to be tapered toward a tip portion thereof; performing a first etching in which the electrolytically polished part of the emitter material is irradiated with a charged-particle beam to form a pyramid-like sharpened part having a vertex including the tip portion; performing a second etching in which the tip portion is further sharpened through field-assisted gas etching, while observing a crystal structure at the tip portion by a field ion microscope and keeping the number of atoms at a leading edge of the tip portion at a predetermined number or less; and heating the emitter material to arrange the atoms at the leading edge of the tip portion of the sharpened part in a pyramid shape.

The surface emitter is fashioned as a parallel surface emitter with at least two emitter surfaces spaced apart from one another, to which at least one electrically conductive cutoff electrode is fed that is galvanically separated from the parallel surface emitter. Such a cathode has a good cutoff capability.
