When a P lock state is set on the basis of a predetermined request signal for setting the P lock state, a P position indicator lamp (62) is turned on or off on the basis of the status of power supplied to the vehicle (10). For example, when the P lock state is set, the P position indicator lamp (62) is turned off when the power status is an ALL-OFF status where a combination meter (56), or the like, is not turned on or is raised to an ACC-ON status; whereas, when the P lock state is set, the P position indicator lamp (62) is turned on when the power status is an IG-ON status, when the power status is changed from the IG-ON status during vehicle driving to the ACC-ON status, or within a predetermined period of time from when the power status is changed from the IG-ON status to the ALL-OFF status.

A selector (1) may be displaced from a return position to make a selection from a number of available possibilities and then returned to the return position. The selector includes a display (3) operative to display an indication of a current selection at a position adjacent the return position. The selector may be an automotive automatic transmission selector. The display may display an indication of some or all of the available selections together, and the positions of the indications move relative to the return position as a selection is made, so that an indication of the chosen selection is displayed adjacent the return position.

This apparatus for a vehicle having a multi-gear transmission comprises (i) an analogue tachometer display device (8) indicating by continuously displacing a pointer (11 ) against a graduated scale (10) the number of revolutions per unit of time of a vehicle engine; (ii) a computer processing unit CPU receiving input signals representative of the actual engine speed and of the actual vehicle speed and determining at least one forecast engine speed corresponding to said actual vehicle speed, based on at least one speculated transmission gear ratio; and a gear indicator display (14) adjacent to the graduated scale (10) on which a current gear figure (15) corresponding to the currently engaged gear is digitally displayed next to the current position of the pointer (11 ), and a speculated gear figure (16) corresponding to the at least one speculated gear is digitally displayed next to the corresponding forecast engine speed on the graduated scale. In effect the invention can incite to engage the optimum gear which is achieved by displaying not only the optimum gear but also the consequence on engine speed of engaging the optimum gear.

Die Erfindung bezieht sich auf eine Schaltpunktanzeige in einem Kraftfahrzeug mit Handschaltgetriebe zum Anzeigen eines Schalthinweises und mit einer Steuereinheit zum kontinuierlichen Ermitteln eines aktuellen Betriebspunktes des Kraftfahrzeugs. Erfindungsgemäß ist in einem elektronischen Speicher zumindest eine Hochschalthinweiskennlinie oder eine Rückschalthinweiskennlinie gespeichert. Bei Erreichen der Hochschalthinweiskennlinie oder der Rückschaltkennlinie durch den aktuellen Betriebspunkt und einem dazu unterschiedlich aktuell eingelegten Gang wird ein Hochschalthinweis oder ein Rückschalthinweis angezeigt, wobei der Hochschalthinweis oder Rückschalthinweis so lange angezeigt wird, bis der Fahrer einen entsprechenden Hochschaltvorgang oder Rückschaltvorgang vorgenommen hat oder bis der aktuellen Betriebspunkt eine zur Hochschalthinweiskennlinie reduzierte Hochschalthinweis-Hysteresekennlinie erreicht und/oder unterschritten, oder eine zur Rückschalthinweiskennlinie erhöhte Rückschalthinweis- Hysteresekennlinie erreicht und/oder überschritten hat.

An automatic transmission lever position indicating device (10) comprising a housing (12) including a face wall structure (16) presenting within an opaque background a sequence of translucent characters (20) corresponding in sequence with the positions of the lever. A circuit board is mounted within the housing including leads for receiving and transmitting signals including the input signals of the automatic transmission. An illuminating assembly is carried by the circuit board for illuminating all of the sequence of translucent characters (20) and additionally indicating by illumination one of the sequence of translucent characters (20) corresponding to the position the lever is in. The illuminating assembly includes a light emitting diode (32) associated with each translucent character (20) of the sequence, the light emitting diodes (32) being connected with the leads for energizing the light emitting diodes (32) in a manner determined by the input signals received so as to illuminate the one light emitting diode (32) associated with the translucent character (20) of the sequence corresponding to the position the lever is in so that the illumination of the associated one light emitting diode (32) provides said additional indication by illumination.

A method and apparatus is disclosed for evaluating the driving of a vehicle performing a journey on a road network, comprising determining at least one constant speed zone of the road network, a constant speed zone being a portion of the road network at which the vehicle can travel at a constant speed, said determination being based upon expected speeds of travel along the road network determined from positional data relating to the movements of a plurality of vehicles over time along the road network. A speed of the vehicle traversing the road network is determined at a plurality of times during the journey, and a value indicative of a consistency of the speed of the vehicle within the at least one constant speed zone is further determined.
