A thermally-reactive polymer that forms a polymer-coupled reactive species upon heating is described and useful for forming coated surfaces. The polymer-coated surface has improved lubricity and passivity. A thermally-reactive quaternary amine-containing polymer was produced that provides passivity and anti-microbial activity.

The invention provides a controlled release bioactive agent delivery device that includes a body member having a direction of extension, a longitudinal axis along the direction of extension, and a proximal end and a distal end, wherein at least a portion of the body member deviates from the direction of extension, and a polymeric coated composition in contact with the body member, the polymeric coated composition including a first polymer, a second polymer, and a bioactive agent, wherein the first polymer comprises polyalkyl(meth)acrylate, aromatic poly(meth)acrylate, or a combination of polyalkyl(meth)acrylate and aromatic poly(meth)acrylate, and wherein the second polymer comprises poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate). The invention also provides methods of delivering a bioactive agent to a patient in a controlled release manner, as well as methods of making a controlled release bioactive agent delivery device.

The initiator polymers can be used with a polymerizable material for the formation of a polymeric matrix on a surface. The initiator polymers are particularly useful for cell encapsulation using macromers.

Initiator polymers having an initiator group and a ligand group are provided. The initiator polymers are capable of specifically binding to a receptor on a surface. Using a macromer system, the initiator polymers are useful for the formation of a polymeric matrix on the surface of a material. In particular, initiator polymers are provided that have specificity to pancreatic β cells and can be used to encapsulate cells for transplantation and the treatment of diabetes.

The barrier, as provided by block copolymers or photoderivatized polymers, provides protection to the polymeric composition from mechanical damage and/or delamination during fabrication, storage, delivery or deployment, and/or residence of the device within the body. A combination that includes a medical device, such as a stent, and another device, such as a surrounding sheath or internal expandable balloon, between which is positioned a barrier of the type described.

A coating apparatus for coating a rollable device including a device rotator having a pair of rollers and spray nozzle is described. The spray nozzle produces a spray of coating material that is directed towards a gap that is between the rollers of the pair. The majority of any spray not deposited on the rollable device during a coating process passes through the gap between the rollers.

A detection scheme is performed to detect the marker associated with the microparticle and the identity of the probe, and any target bound to the probe.

Once crosslinked, the coating composition provides a gel matrix adapted to contain the medicament in a form that permits the medicament to be released from the matrix in a prolonged, controlled, predictable and effective manner in vivo . A composition includes a polyether monomer, such as an alkoxy poly(alkylene glycol), a carboxylic acid-containing monomer, such as (meth)acrylic acid, a photoderivatized monomer, and a hydrophilic monomer such as acrylamide.
