The storage vessel includes a reinforcing filament wrapped around the interconnected chambers and interconnecting conduit sections to limit radial expansion of the chambers and conduit sections when filled with a fluid under pressure. The storage vessel further includes a fluid transfer control system attached to the storage vessel for controlling fluid flow into and out of the pressure vessel and a gas delivery mechanism for delivering gas from the storage vessel to a user in a breathable manner.

A steel liner (a pipe or vessel) is wrapped with a stack of sheets of glass fiber-reinforced epoxy matrix composite arranged in angle ply pattern. The stack is cured on the liner to bond the sheets together and to the liner. The wrapped liner is then internally pressurized to cause the liner to yield while the composite remains elastic. When de-pressurized, the liner has compressive residual stress and the composite has tensile residual stress. When the resulting hybrid structure is subsequently again pressurized, it is found that the elastic regime of the liner has been extended.

A composite overwrapped pressure vessel (COPV) is manufactured by combining a thin liner (20) made of a metal having a high modulus of elasticity and high ductility, a high-performance composite overwrap (50) and a high-performance film adhesive (40) at the overwrap/liner interface. The metal liner (20) can be fabricated from readily available titanium alloy sheet and plate using a combination of spin forming and machining to fabricate components and electron-beam welding for tank assembly. The composite overwrap (50) is filament-wound onto an adhesive-covered titanium liner (20), and the overwrap (50) and adhesive (40) are co-cured in an oven to yield an integrated tank structure (10).
