Vehicles in transit within a location may transmit and/or receive information about transit events arising within the location, such as accidents, developing weather, and road obstructions. Because localized exchange channels, such as a radiofrequency broadcast, may be range-limited and/or unreliable, a centralized service may be provided to facilitate the exchange of notifications about transit events, but it may be difficult to provide a centralized service that is both scalable to millions of vehicles and capable of low-latency exchange of time-sensitive notifications for transit events. The techniques presented herein provide an architecture for broadcasting transit events through a transit service that maintains vehicle area groups, respectively identifying the vehicles that are associated with each location. The service may receive a notification of a transit event for a location, and may utilize the vehicle area group for the location to broadcast the notification to the other vehicles of the area group.

Among other things, one or more techniques and/or systems are provided for providing users with access to a route for travelling. A user, of a client device, may send a request for access to the route to a route planning service. The route may correspond to a starting location and an ending location. The route planning service may query a route database to identify an entry indicating that a restricted access road segment (e.g., a high occupancy vehicle lane, a shoulder lane, a bus lane, etc.) and/or a road segment (e.g., comprising a traffic light alteration capability) exists between the starting location and the ending location. Responsive to successfully authorizing the user for travelling the restricted access road segment and/or the road segment, the route, comprising the restricted access road segment and/or the road segment, may be provided to the client device.

A device is disclosed for generating navigation instructions for display on a display device of a portable navigation device, comprising: means for accessing a repository storing digital map data pertaining to a navigable network along which the navigation device can travel; means for generating, for display on the display device, a three-dimensional perspective view of a model representative of the map data as though from a camera positioned at an elevation and pitch angle behind a current position of the portable navigation device, that is updated to follow the device as it travels along a planned route through the navigable network; and means for generating, in response to detecting that the current position of the navigation device is closer than a predetermined distance to a decision point in the planned route, a fast forward preview of the upcoming decision point by advancing the position of the camera for the three- dimensional perspective view along the planned route at a speed faster than the rate of travel of the current position of the device. The collision avoidance module may identify an external object that could possibly collide with the source object. The collision avoidance module may determine a likelihood of collision with the external object based on navigation information received from the navigation module. The navigation module may receive information pertaining to the likelihood of collision determination from the collision avoidance module and determine whether to include collision avoidance information and/or modify navigation instructions to generate a navigation output.

A user records a navigation instruction for a manoeuvre at a junction via their navigation device. The user indicates a distance before the junction at which the manoeuvre should be provided. The user does this by providing an input to the navigation device when a current position is at the relevant distance while driving around. The device then determines the manoeuvre in a digital map to be associated with the instruction by determining the next manoeuvre in a calculated route the user is following. The navigation device uploads the navigation instruction and the associated manoeuvre and distance to a central navigation instruction database. Other users may then download and use the navigation instruction.
