Xanthan-esters and acridans are substrates for horseradish peroxidase. These stable, enzymatically cleavable chemiluminescent esters are substrates for horseradish peroxidase which, together with peroxide is among the extensively used enzyme in enzyme-linked detection methods, including immunoassays, oligonucleotide detection and nucleic acid hybridization. The novel compounds are used, together with peroxide, alkali and the peroxidase, to indicate the presence and/or concentration of target compounds. The assays may be enhanced by the use of polymeric quaternary onium enhancement compounds or similar compounds selected to enhance the chemiluminescence emitted.

An organic electroluminescence device having a low driving voltage and a long life and a material having a small ionization potential and providing a large hole mobility when used as a layer or region are disclosed. The organic electroluminescence device is characterized in that the device comprises a pair of electrodes and an organic luminescent layer sandwiched between the electrodes, a hole transport region between the electrodes contains a phenylenediamine derivative expressed by a specific structural formula and having a hole mobility of 10 cm /V•s or more when used as a material of a layer or region, and the organic luminescent layer contains a charge injection assisting material.

Embodiments of the present disclosure pertain to methods of opening a lipid bilayer by associating the lipid bilayer with a molecule that includes a moving component capable of moving (e.g., rotating) in response to an external stimulus; and exposing the molecule to an external stimulus before, during or after associating the molecule with the lipid bilayer. The exposing causes the moving component of the molecule to move and thereby open the lipid bilayer (e.g., by pore formation). The external stimuli may include an energy source, such as ultraviolet light. The opened lipid bilayer may be a component of cell membranes in vitro or in vivo . The opening of the lipid bilayer may allow for the passage of various materials (e.g., active agents, such as peptide -based drugs) through the lipid bilayer and into cells. Additional embodiments of the present disclosure pertain to the aforementioned molecules for opening lipid bilayers.
