The invention relates to a compound of formula ##STR1## in which: X denotes a branched or unbranched alkylene radical containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms, optionally being able to be substituted with one or more hydroxyl radicals;R denotes a hydrogen atom, an alkyl or a mono- or polyhydroxyalkyl radical or an aminoalkyl radical in which the amine group can be mono- or disubstituted with an alkyl radical or with a mono- or polyhydroxyalkyl radical, the nitrogen atom also being able to form part of a heterocyclic system and the alkyl radicals containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms;R' denotes a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl radical;Y and Z denote a nitro and/or --NHR.sub.1 radical, R.sub.1 and R, which may be identical or different, having the meanings given above for R, with the proviso that when Y and Z are identical, they necessarily denote nitro radicals,and the cosmetically acceptable salts of the compounds containing a salifiable amine group, and also the process for preparing it and its use in dyeing keratinous fibres, and especially human hair.

New chloro-meta-phenylenediamines, their use as couplers in the oxidation dyeing of keratinous fibres, dyeing compositions for hair containing these compounds and dyeing process using the said compositions.The invention relates to the compounds of formula: ##STR1## in which Z and Z' denote, independently of one another, an alkyl radical having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a hydroxyalkyl radical having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, andR.sub.1 and R.sub.2 denote, independently of one another, a hydrogen atom, an alkyl radical having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a mono- or polyhydroxyalkyl radical having 2 or 3 carbon atoms, to their addition salts with an acid, and to their use by way of couplers for the oxidation dyeing of keratinous fibres, especially human hair.These compounds, when they are combined with paraphenylenediamines, surprisingly give beige to light brown hues or purple hues of greater or lesser redness, depending on the substitution of the 5-amino group of the chlorobenzene.

Mono, di and tri-esters of 1,8-dihydroxy-10-phenyl-9-anthrone or -9-anthranol have the formula ##STR1## wherein p is 0 or 1,(a) when p=0, t=1 and R.sub.2 represents hydrogen or --COR.sub.3,(b) when p=1, t=0 and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each independently represent hydrogen or --COR.sub.3,R.sub.3 represents linear or branched alkyl having 1-17 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl, phenyl or phenyl substituted by lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, halogen, a nitro function, --CF.sub.3 or a hydroxyl function, and mixtures of said esters. These esters are prepared by reacting 1,8-dihydroxy-10-phenyl-9-anthrone with an activated form of an acid. The esters are useful in human or veterinary medicine and in cosmetic compositions.
