Abstract:
A method of enhancing a mammalian immune response to a virus is disclosed. The method comprises administering a composition comprising an effective amount of epinecidin (Epi)-1 and the virus to a mammal, wherein the virus has envelope protein and is infectious to the mammal. A vaccine kit and a method for preventing Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection are also disclosed.
Abstract:
Methods for metabolic oligosaccharide engineering that incorporates derivatized alkyne-bearing sugar analogs as “tags” into cellular glycoconjugates are disclosed. Alkynyl derivatized Fuc and alkynyl derivatized ManNAc sugars are incorporated into cellular glycoconjugates. Chemical probes comprising an azide group and a visual or fluorogenic probe and used to label alkyne-derivatized sugar-tagged glycoconjugates are disclosed. Chemical probes bind covalently to the alkynyl group by Cu(I)-catalyzed [3+2] azide-alkyne cycloaddition and are visualized at the cell surface, intracellularly, or in a cellular extract. The labeled glycoconjugate is capable of detection by flow cytometry, SDS-PAGE, Western blot, ELISA, confocal microscopy, and mass spectrometry.

Abstract:
Novel 5-membered iminocyclitol derivatives were found to be a potent and selective inhibitors of the glycoprotein processing α- and β-glucosidase which were further found to be active antiviral agents against Japanese encephalitis virus, dengue virus serotype 2 (DEN-2), human SARS coronavirus and human β-hexosaminidase, a new target for development of osteoarthritis therapeutics.
Abstract:
The invention provides nucleic acids, peptides, and antibodies for use in applications including diagnosis and therapy. The peptides target neovasculature and were identified by in vivo phage display. One such peptide, SP5-52, recognized the neovasculature of multiple tumors in SCID mice, but did not target normal blood vessels. This peptide also binds to blood vessels of human lung cancer biopsy specimens. Liposomes comprising SP5-52 and doxorubicin enhanced the efficacy of the drug against multiple human cancer xenografts in SCID mice.
Abstract:
A non-human animal model for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is disclosed. The animal model comprises a rodent whose spinal cord motor neurons have a loss of TAR-DNA binding protein-43 (TDP-43) function and phenotypes exhibit ALS-like symptoms. A method for identifying a candidate agent for treating, preventing and/or inhibiting ALS associated with a loss-of-function of TDP-43 is also disclosed.
Abstract:
A semiconductor material structure includes at least one region capable of generating electrons and holes each having an associated mean kinetic energy during operation. A material layer in proximity to the region provides an associated potential energy larger than the mean kinetic energy associated with the generated electrons and the mean kinetic energy associated with the holes.
Abstract:
The present disclosure relates to the discovery of methods of isolating subfractions of an F3 Reishi extract, and of administration of these novel isolates to eukaryotic cells in order to induce certain immumodulatory, hematopoeitic and tumor-inhibiting phenotypic changes in those eukaryotic cells, mediated through particular toll-like receptor (TLR) and other transmembrane receptors. F3 subfractions F301 and F331 have demonstrated that F331 is capable of activating at least TLR-2 while F301 is capable of activating at least TLR-2, TLR-4, and TLR-5.
Abstract:
A durable on-column tunneled frit was developed for use in nanoflow UPLC systems. The frit was tunneled during sol-gel reaction. The tunneled-frit fabrication process is easy and reproducible in terms of back pressure and durability. This design creates low backpressure with high liquid flow, which is suitable for the nanoflowUPLC application. A short packing (2 cm C18 particle) tunneled-frit column was demonstrated to sustain 10,000 psi continuous liquid flow for over one week without any particle leakage or pressure instability. The tunneled-frit was also successfully applied to the fabrication of nanoUPLC trapping and analytical column system. It was demonstrated to have high separation efficiency and sensitivity for the analysis of tryptic peptides as well as improved detection sensitivity for phosphopeptide analysis.
