Abstract:
In a frequently used speech synthesis for voice output an excitation signal is applied to a number of resonators whose frequency and amplitude are adjusted in accordance with the sound to be produced. These parameters for adjusting the resonators may be gained from natural speech signals. Such parameters gained from natural speech signals may also be used for speech recognition, in which these parameter values are compared with comparison values. According to the invention, the parameters, particularly the formant frequencies, are determined by forming the power density spectrum via discrete frequencies from which autocorrelation coefficients are formed for consecutive frequency segments of the power density spectrum from which, in turn, error values are formed, while the sum of the error values is minimized over all segments and the optimum boundary frequencies of the segments are determined for this minimum. Via the autocorrelation coefficients, the LPC predictor coefficients can then be computed, from which coefficients the formant frequency is computed. The minimum of the error sum for the individual segments is found by way of dynamic programming, in which auxiliary values are initially computed from the power density spectrum and stored as Tables from which the autocorrelation coefficients are easily determined for individual frequency segments which are required for the computations in the dynamic programming process.
Abstract:
A delay device includes storage elements arranged in at least two rows 4, 5; 6, 7 in an integrated circuit, preferably in switched-capacitor technology. The delay device 2; 3 has an even number of storage elements. A first clock signal is provided from which, for producing a delay time equal to an odd multiple of the clock period of the first clock signal, a second clock signal is derived by means of a clock generation circuit 9, this second clock signal clocking the storage elements and being derived from the first clock signal in such a manner that one clock pulse of the first clock signal is suppressed in a selectable or given cycle and all the other clock pulses in the cycle are taken over in the second clock signal.

A battery is disclosed having two electrodes, each with a conductive strip connected thereto. A separator separates the two electrodes and an insulating envelope encloses the two electrodes. The two electrodes extend from openings of the insulating envelope and curve over the envelope toward the battery center.
Abstract:
In a speech communication network in which a transmitter (1) transmits speech signals via a network (4) to a receiver (8), it can happen that more traffic is offered to the network (4) than it can handle. In order to reduce the network load, at least one node (24) is arranged to perform bitrate reduction to delete some of the prediction parameters representing the speech signal. It can also be the case that a receiver comprises a speech decoder having insufficient computational power available for decoding the encoded speech signal. In such case, the speech decoder is arranged for using only a part of the prediction parameters available. This results in a lower complexity of the synthesis filter (60).
Abstract:
An assembly of electrodes for an electron is inspected. The relative positions of a number of apertures (at least three but preferably four) is determined by means of two optical systems, one for determining the positions of two apertures of electrodes, e.g. the G1 and the G2 electrode, the other for determining the position of the other aperture or apertures.
Abstract:
An integrated receiver in which in order to permit ac-coupling between stages and to remove the effects of strong directly detected amplitude modulated interfering signals lying within the input band of the receiver, the input signal is frequency down converted using a local oscillator signal which provides an intermediate frequency (F.sub.if) which lies above the frequency of the directly detected interferer (F.sub.AMP). The outputs from the frequency down converters (14, 16, 18, 20) are ac coupled to filtering means the outputs of which are applied to an equalizer (52). The filtering means may comprise a polyphase filter (50), the frequency response of which is distorted by the ac coupling capacitors (54, 56). By applying the outputs of the filtering means to the equalizer (52) substantially all the distortion introduced by the ac coupling capacitors (54, 56) on the filter response is removed to provide an acceptable signal for detection and recovery of the modulating signal.
Abstract:
An interactive entertainment apparatus is provided having means (10,14) for modelling a virtual environment populated by modelled characters, with each of the characters being controlled by respective rule-based agents. A camera control function (58) within the apparatus processor periodically monitors at least one compiled behavior per character agent, together with the respective locations within the virtual environment for each of the characters. The processor (10) generates clusters of adjacent characters within the virtual environment in accordance with predetermined clustering criteria such as relatively proximity and commonality of behavioral characteristics, and generates a respective cluster value derived from the current settings of the monitored behaviors within that cluster. In operation, one cluster is selected in dependence on the derived cluster values and, following determination of the location of that cluster within the virtual environment, the viewpoint from which the image of the virtual environment is rendered is shifted to a further viewpoint overlooking the selected cluster.

A battery-powered electrical device comprising a switchable voltage drain (3,5) and a rechargeable battery (1), and further comprising means for measuring the voltage V across the terminals of the battery (1) as a function of cumulative discharge time t, and for determining the cumulative discharge time t.sub.p corresponding to the attainment of the local extremum of least magnitude in the derivative dV/dt. In a particular embodiment, the device contains means for interrupting the voltage drain (3,5) upon expiry of a cumulative discharge time t.sub.e =nt.sub.p, whereby n is a fixed, pre-selected real number. In addition, it is possible to calculate and display the remaining discharge time t.sub.rem =m.sub.o t.sub.o -t, where m.sub.o is a fixed, pre-selected real number. The values of n and m.sub.o will generally be chosen to lie in the range 1.2-6.
Abstract:
In a rule-based processor, populations of component agents are enabled to self-assemble into compound agents such as to give a degree of distributed artificial intelligence in a relatively simple system. The majority of component agents have top and bottom decision structures into which requesting agents can insert rules: the rule selected by a decision structure is the one which is valid following evaluation of a priority criteria and leads to the placing of a marker from the selecting agent to the requesting agent. With the two decision structures, behaviour trees may be formed from the top down or the bottom up, as required by the instantaneous situation to which the compound agent is responding.
Abstract:
A system for controlled reproduction of information according to the invention comprises an information carrier and a reading device. The information carrier contains information in blocks written in a track. The information carrier has reference patterns which divide the track into sectors for writing the information blocks, and auxiliary information written in the reference patterns. The auxiliary information is related to the information, for example, a decoding key, access code or digital signature. The reading device comprises a demodulation means for recovering both the information and the auxiliary information. The device may include means for processing the information and/or auxiliary information in dependence on the auxiliary information. Since the auxiliary information cannot be transferred to an illegal copy, this copy is unusable.
