Abstract: A method for making a plasticized polymer comprises polymerizing a polymerizable monomer, such as an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, in a plasticizer, such as mineral oil, and in the presence of a catalyst system. The plasticized polymer may be mixed with a tackifying resin in a method for making an adhesive. A composition, which may be useful as an adhesive, comprises a polymer system comprising a first polymer; a plasticized system comprising a first plasticizer that was in the presence of the first polymer during the polymerization step to make the first polymer; and a tackifier. The method can be used to make compositions having polymers with a low density or a low molecular weight or both. The final compositions made by methods of the invention include adhesives, sealants, coating, or lubricants.

Abstract: A method of adhering substrate surfaces to one another comprises applying a copolyester resin mixture to the surfaces and contacting the surfaces with one another in the absence of heat to form a cold seal. The copolyester resin may be sulfonated and the reaction product of (a) at least two diols comprising ethylene glycol at a mole fraction of at least about 0.25 and (b) at least three diacids or diesters comprising: (i) a sulfomonomer at a mole fraction of at least 0.02, preferably at least 0.07; (ii) at least one aromatic diacid or diester; and (iii) at least one aliphatic diacid or diester. The ratio of aromatic to aliphatic diacids or diesters may be between about 75/25 and about 45/55, and the glass transition temperature of the resin may be between about −25° C. and about 15° C. The resin may be solvated and preferably is food grade compliant and compostable.

Abstract: A semicrystalline copolyester resin composition formed by twin screw extrusion of various ingredients includes copolyester resins, antiblock, slip and antifog additives. This semicrystalline copolyester resin can be extruded on to PET film or coextruded with PET resin to form clear PET films with antifog properties. These films with antifog properties are produced in a single step without the use of solvent and does not involve any secondary step for coating a separate antifog layer. This minimizes the cost and time required by a converter to make such clear antifog films. These films containing the heat seal copolyester resin can be heat sealed to clear APET trays. Contents within the trays, such as food, can be seen without fogging on the inside of the film that is used to seal the tray. The seals are strong and the peels are smooth giving a very good packaging performance.

Abstract: A copolyester resin comprises the reaction product of at least two aliphatic diols and at least two aromatic diacids or diesters comprising a naphthalene-based monomer and terephthalic-based monomer and has a glass transition temperature between about 65° C. and about 95° C. A coating comprises a copolyester resin comprising the reaction product of at least two aliphatic diols and at least one aromatic diacid or diester comprising the naphthalene-based monomer; a cross-linker; and metal catalyst. The coating composition may be solvated and provides excellent retort resistance, flexibility, chemical resistance, and ability to bond to metal substrates, including tin-plated steel. The copolyester resin may be food grade compliant and alcohol compliant, making it suitable for use as a can coating, especially for beverages and even alcoholic beverages with no restrictions on the alcohol content.

Abstract: A hot melt pressure sensitive adhesive composition comprises: (a) a block copolymer comprising a first polymer block comprising an ethylene residue and a second polymer block comprising a C1 to C4 alkyl acrylate residue, wherein the block copolymer has a melt index as measured in accordance with ASTM D1238 of between about 0.1 and about 250 g/10 min; (b) a tackifying resin; and (c) a plasticizer. A method for making a laminate comprises the steps of: applying the hot melt pressure sensitive adhesive composition of the invention in a molten state to a primary substrate and allowing the adhesive to cool to form a bond with said primary substrate. Certain adhesives the invention perform comparably to certain styrene block copolymer adhesives, but provides an alternative polymer source.

Abstract: A polymer composition for use in a hot melt adhesive comprises at least one semierystalline, low molecular weight (LMW) propylene-based polymer; at least one essentially amorphous, high molecular weight (HMW) propylene-based polymer; and at least one essentially amorphous, LMW propylene-based polymer. A hot melt adhesive composition further contains a tackifier, a plasticizer, an antioxidant, and optionally a wax, a filler, a colorant, a UV absorber, another polymer, or combinations thereof. The hot melt adhesive is useful for a variety of industrial applications where bonding of low surface energy substrates is encountered, including disposable nonwoven hygienic articles, labeling and other assembly applications. Particularly preferred applications include nonwoven disposable diaper and feminine sanitary napkin construction, diaper and adult incontinent brief elastic attachment, diaper and napkin core stabilization, diaper backsheet lamination, industrial filter material conversion, and surgical gown and surgical drape assemblies. The composition demonstrates improved peel strength while maintaining very good creep resistance.

Abstract: An adhesive composition for adhesively bonding floor coverings to a variety of substrates. The composition includes 0.2 to 10 weight percent of a plurality of irregularly shaped spacer particles of size 0.5 mm to 10 mm; 10 to 50 weight percent of a moisture curable polymer system; and 40 to 90 weight percent of additives for modifying physical properties of the composition. The adhesive has a composition such that, when cured, results in an elastomeric film of uniform thickness that exhibits controlled moisture vapor transmission and sound abatement properties. A floor structure and a method for constructing the floor structure using the adhesive composition are also provided.

Abstract: A hot melt adhesive composition, which may be used as a construction adhesive in hygiene articles, comprises a first polymer comprising a unimodal copolymer of propylene and ethylene and having a weight average molecular weight of between about 5,000 and 60,000 daltons; a second polymer comprising a copolymer of propylene and ethylene and having a weight average molecular weight of at least 100,000 daltons; a tackifying resin having a Ring & Ball softening point of at most 115° C.; and a plasticizer. The composition demonstrates good peel strength and good shear resistance and is sprayable, with a sufficiently low viscosity, at low application temperatures, such as at about 121° C.
