Abstract:
Emulsion polymers obtained by emulsifying a monomer mixture of(A) 5-95% by weight of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile and/or substituted or unsubstituted styrene and(B) 5-95% by weight of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid esters containing 1-12 carbon atoms in the alcohol group,the sum of components (A)+(B) amounting to 100% by weight, in the presence of an aqueous solution or dispersion of a water soluble or water dispersible, cationically modified polyurethane, and subjecting the resulting emulsion to a radically initiated polymerization. The emulsion polymers are preferably used as paper sizes or in paper sizes together with conventional additives.

The present invention relates to a process for the production of polyisocyanate compositions containing urethane groups and having an isocyanate content of about 0.5 to 45% by weight by the reaction of(a) an organic polyisocyanate or mixtures thereof having an isocyanate content of about 30 to 50% by weight with(b) organic polyhydroxyl compounds using an equivalent ratio of isocyanate groups to hydroxyl groups of at least 1.8:1, characterized in that the polyhydroxyl compounds (b) are based on(b1) polyhydroxypolyacrylates having an average molecular weight, determined by vapor pressure osmometry, of 232 to about 100,000 which optionally contain urethane or ester groups in side chains, and a statistical average of at least one alcoholic hydroxyl group per molecule(b2) optionally in admixture with up to about 250% by weight, based on (b1), of other polyhydroxyl compounds in the molecular weight range of 62 to about 12,000.The invention also relates to the polyisocyanate compositions obtainable by this process and their use as components for the production of polyurethanes or polyurethane ureas.

The present invention relates to new water-soluble polyquaternary compounds which are obtained by imidation of (A) specific alternating copolymers of maleic anhydride and olefines with (B) specific amines and (C) subsequent alkylation of the reaction product AB, the components (A) and (B) having the meaning given in the text of the Application. The invention furthermore relates to a process for the preparation of these water-soluble polyammonium compounds and their use as agents for improving the wet and dry tear strength of paper. The invention also relates to new intermediate products for the preparation of the compounds according to the invention.

The aqueous solution of a statistical terpolymer containing quaternized amino groups and having a regular chemical structure of(a) from 8 to 20%, by weight, of N,N-dimethylaminoethyl acrylate and/or N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate;(b) from 45 to 80%, by weight, of styrene; and(c) from 8 to 35%, by weight, of acrylonitrile;the sum of (a) to (c) being 100%, by weight, and at least 10% of the dimethylamino groups of the terpolymer being quaternized and the remainder protonated is suitable as cationic paper sizing agent.
