Viscosifiers, especially terminated polymers that have functional terminal groups, the polymers being pre-extended by polyols and being reacted to give polymers that are terminated by other functional groups, are produced. The viscosifiers have a low content in educts or educt descendants that deteriorate the properties of compositions. The formation of high-molecular addition products is considerably reduced or even excluded so that the products obtained have low viscosity and good storage stability. The epoxy-terminated polymer of formula (I) is especially preferred.

The present invention discloses reworkable epoxy compositions suitable for encapsulation of and underfill for electronic components comprising (a) a curable epoxy component which is the reaction product of an epoxidized 1-alkenyl ether or 1-cycloalkenyl ether and a polycarboxylic acid, the reaction product being substantially free of unreacted acid or acid impurities; and (b) a curing agent for the epoxy component, wherein the reaction products of the epoxy composition are reworkable. The cured epoxy compositions of this invention contain thermally labile weak α-alkoxy ester linkages which provide for the reworkable aspect of the invention.

The invention provides for a process for the preparation of an advanced resin by reaction of a compound having on average more than one epoxy group per molecule and a compound having on average one or more hydroxyl group or carboxyl group per molecule in the presence of a catalyst at elevated temperature, the process comprising (1) mixing the epoxy compound, the hydroxyl compound or the carboxyl compound and the catalyst, and (2) transferring the mixture as a feedstream to a surface exposed to an elevated temperature sufficient to produce an advanced epoxy resin which is at least intermittently moving with respect to the feedstream. In a preferred embodiment an endless conveyer belt with additional heating means and optional cooling means are used.

Oxazolidone ring-containing epoxy resins (a) produced by the reaction between a diglycidyl ether or ester and an organic diisocyanate are reacted with (b) a first active hydrogen compound such as mono- or diols, mono- or dicarboxylic acids in less than a stoichiometric amount in terms of the active hydrogen atom relative to the epoxy group, and then with (c) a second active hydrogen compound such as amines or sulfide-acid mixtures or polycarboxylic acids in a stoichiometric amount relative to the remaining epoxy group. The resulting hydrophilic modified resin has an oxazolidone ring-containing backbone terminated with an ionizable group. A water-borne paints are formulated from the hydrophilic modified resin by dispersing in an aqueous medium containing a crosslinker and a neutralizing agent.
