    摘要: A bioabsorbable rivet and pin fastener is formed as an elongated unit that may be used for anchoring, or for attachment of a fixation plate. The rivet has a head mechanically connected to two or more legs that extend generally distally from the head and may flex outwardly from a central rivet axis. The pin is integral with the rivet and oriented along the central axis by a connection such as a web or a plurality of braces, forming an integral, aligned, one-piece assembly that may, for example, be molded as a single piece. The connection breaks under force as the pin is driven into the rivet, so that the pin contacts internal surfaces of the legs and pushes the legs outward into frictional engagement with the surrounding bone. The one-piece assembly may be formed in a gated mold having a central pin with a relief passage that defines the braces between upper and lower portions of the rivet. The braces so formed at the weld line readily part from the mold, and are easily sheared when the pin is advanced during installation of the rivet.

The tubular flexible stent has a cylindrical shape defining a longitudinal axis and includes a helical section having of a plurality of longitudinally oriented strut members and a plurality of circumferentially oriented hinge members connecting circumferentially adjacent strut members to form a band. The band is wrapped about the longitudinal axis in a substantially helical manner to form a plurality of helical windings. At least one connector member extends between longitudinally adjacent helical windings of the band.

    摘要: Systems and methods for fatigue testing one or more stents based on measured electrical resistance levels of each stent. Pairs of lead lines from an ohmmeter are connected to a respective stent. The respective stent is mounted onto an expander having an interior tapered portion into which a correspondingly tapered expansion pin is received. Cyclic loading strains are applied to the respective stent as an expansion pin is inserted into a corresponding one of the expanders. Stent fracture or failure occurs when cyclic loading exceeds the stents architectural and material capacity. Such fracture fatigue or failure is identified by increased electrical resistance levels. Resistance may be continuously monitored to more readily identify the onset of fatigue or failure. The expansion pins extend from a movable plate, and the expanders comprise a part of corresponding stations that extend from a fixed plate.

    摘要: An intramedullary nail has a dynamization opening that accommodates and utilizes a dynamization window insert. The dynamization window insert is press-fit into the dynamization opening. The dynamization window insert is oval shaped and includes first and second protrusions that extend from respective surfaces of the dynamization window insert. The dynamization opening is sized to receive the dynamization window insert but compress the protrusions/window insert during insertion. The dynamization opening includes channels or grooves that are sized to accommodate the protrusions and allow the protrusions/window insert to return to an uncompressed state when situated therein.     摘要: An apparatus for compressing a coiled stent having at least one protrusion, such as an enlarged coil disposed at the end of the stent, has a mandrel insertable into a lumen of the stent for holding the stent by friction and a coil compressor coupled to the mandrel. The mandrel is rotatable on an axis relative to the coil compressor and the coil compressor has a tab extending therefrom towards the mandrel. A stent is placed on the mandrel with the enlarged coil extending toward the coil compressor. The tab presses the enlarged coil inwardly toward the lumen of the stent when the mandrel is rotated relative to the coil compressor.

    摘要: A biocompatible fastener that may be used for attachment of a fixation plate to bone is described herein, where the fastener has features that facilitate its deployment in a surgical environment. The fastener is composed of a screw, having a threaded shaft and slotted head, and a detachable body that is used for deploying the screw and is then broken away and discarded. The slot in the head of the screw has stress concentrating notch features that direct the fracture lines into the screw head upon detachment of the secondary body, thus ensuring that the screw head surface remains smooth after deployment. A suitable driver for applying the fastener is also described.
