Abstract: A power switching circuit provides temperature compensation for an insulated gate power switching device. A timing circuit determines a switch timing signal comprising desired on and off switching times of the switching device. A temperature monitor quantifies a device temperature. A gate drive profile generator generates a switching device drive signal according to the switch timing signal and having a dv/dt phase and a di/dt phase. The drive signal has a profile during the di/dt phase that is adjusted in response to the device temperature, and the drive signal has a profile during the dv/dt phase that is not adjusted in response to the device temperature.

The vehicle powertrain also includes a controller that applies voltage to a gate of the IGBT at a first level for a first duration that depends on a capacitance of the gate, and increases the voltage over a second duration based on a rate of change of the current falling below a threshold defined by a supply voltage for the load.

Abstract: Current imbalances between parallel switching devices in a power converter half leg are reduced. A gate driver generates a nominal PWM gate drive signal for a respective half leg. A first feedback loop couples the nominal PWM gate drive signal to a gate terminal of a respective first switching device. The first feedback loop has a first mutual inductance with a current path of a first parallel switching device and has a second mutual inductance with a current path of a second parallel switching device. The first and second mutual inductances are arranged to generate opposing voltages in the first feedback loop, so that when all the parallel switching devices carry equal current then the voltages cancel.

Abstract: An inverter phase leg has upper and lower gate drive circuits supplying gate drive signals to upper and lower transistors. Each gate drive circuit includes an active clamp for selectively deactivating the upper and lower transistors. The transistors are comprised of semiconductor devices, each having respective gate, source, and emitter terminals. Each emitter terminal is connected to a respective output electrode structured to enhance a common source inductance between the respective gate and emitter terminals. Each emitter terminal is further connected to a respective Kelvin emitter electrode substantially bypassing the respective output electrode. Each respective active clamp is connected between the respective gate terminal and Kelvin emitter electrode so that the active clamping function remains effective in the presence of the enhanced common source inductance.

Abstract: An electrified vehicle propulsion system uses current feedback to modify gate drive signals to suppress voltage spikes and increase switching efficiency. A DC link having a link capacitor and a link inductance is connected to first and second converters. A first converter bridge has a first phase leg with first upper and lower switching devices, each switching device having a respective gate loop. A second converter bridge has a second phase leg with second upper and lower switching devices, each switching device having a respective gate loop. A plurality of gate drivers provide gate drive signals to respective gate loops for turning the respective switching devices on and off. A plurality of gate coils are provided, wherein each gate coil is connected in series between a respective gate driver and a respective gate loop. Each gate coil is respectively inductively coupled to the link inductance.

Abstract: Routing of a gate signal for controlling a discrete power switching device (such as in an inverter for an electric vehicle drive) is configured to compensate for the common source inductance inherent in the switching device as a result of its integrated circuit packaging. The power device has a gate signal path via a gate pin and a power signal path via first and second power pins, wherein the gate signal path and the power signal path have a first mutual inductance. A circuit board apparatus provides a gate wiring loop juxtaposed with the power signal path, wherein the gate wiring loop and the power signal path have a second mutual inductance substantially canceling the first mutual inductance. The resulting reduction in common source inductance avoids the reductions in switching speed and the increased switching losses otherwise introduced by the common source inductance.

Abstract: A differential voltage probe for providing accurate measurement of differential voltage with high frequency components is disclosed that is further configured to accurately identify noise sources in EMI/EMC applications. The differential voltage probe is configured to provide the benefits of adequate differential voltage measurement bandwidth, galvanic isolation capability, high CMRR, flexible design to accommodate various requirements on voltage rating, loading effect, and frequency range of interest; and/or easy implementation and low cost.
