The sensor-failure detection and fail-safe system comprises a duplex failsafe system for the throttle-position sensor system and a duplex failsafe system for the accelerator-position sensor system, to provide superior fail-safe functions despite the presence of a throttle-position sensor failure and/or an accelerator-position sensor failure.

In a crank angle sensor signal processor including a microcomputer, the number of generated unit crank angle (1.degree.) signals are counted and compared with a predetermined level. An interrupt demand signal is generated in response to a reference signal only when the number of generated unit signals exceeds the predetermined level in order to minimize the effects of noise on the reference signal. The reference signal is expected to be inputted to the processor immediately after the number of generated unit sensor signals exceeds the predetermined level.

When an accelerator pedal is released while a vehicle is running, a lockup clutch is unlocked. Simultaneously, ignition timing is retarded and a fuel-cut operation to stop fuel supply to an internal combustion engine is performed. However, when it is predicted that a fuel recovery is to be performed after unlocking the lockup clutch, execution of the fuel-cut operation is prohibited. A shock due to the fuel recovery after the fuel-cut operation performed when the accelerator pedal is released is thereby prevented.

An engine torque control device is configured to reduce shift shock while shortening shift time and improving shift response in an engine equipped with a shifting unit. In the engine torque control device engine output torque is subjected to feedback control so that the engine speed will be the target speed (synchronizing speed) after a downshift. The feedback control includes at least a proportional control and a differential control. The differential control is halted until the difference between the synchronizing speed and the actual engine speed is equal to or less than a specified value. Differential control is only performed at or below this specified value.
