Abstract:
A process for the preparation of expandable polystyrene (EPS) containing particles of carbon black and/or graphite is disclosed, comprising: (a) forming a masterbatch by adding carbon black and/or graphite to styrene polymer, (b) adding said masterbatch to an organic phase comprising styrene and optional comonomers, and heating the organic phase to a temperature between 30 and 90° C., (c) mixing the organic phase with an aqueous phase comprising water and suspending agents preheated to a temperature between 80 and 120° C. which is higher than the temperature of the organic phase, and (d) polymerizing in a suspension polymerization reaction the styrene and optional comonomers contained in the mixed aqueous and organic phases, with an expanding agent being added before, during or after the polymerization, wherein the styrene polymer in the masterbatch contains at least 1 000 ppm of dimers. The process gives an improved product.

A foam molding method, a foamed plastic formed by the method, and a foaming agent used in the foam molding method are provided. The foam molding method may include rotating a screw provided in a barrel, feeding a granular or powdered raw material and a foaming agent into the barrel, the foaming agent producing foam through a chemical reaction, melting the fed raw material and producing a gas from the foaming agent, and phase-changing the produced gas to a supercritical state and mixing the gas with the melted raw material.
Abstract:
Biocompatible foams having excellent physical and chemical properties are described. The biocompatible foams can be formed in situ or applied as a pre-formed foam for the treatment of tissue. The invention provides biocompatible degradable foams formed with a poly-α(1→4)glucopyranose macromer. The invention also provides biostable foams formed with a poly(alkylene oxide) macromer.
Abstract:
The foamed electric wire with a conductor and a foamed insulation layer covering the conductor; the foamed insulation layer is obtained by kneading a base resin composed of a high melting point propylene-based resin having a melting point of 150° C. or higher with a master batch containing a thermally decomposing chemical foaming agent and a low melting point propylene-based resin having a melting point of 135° C. or lower and melting the low melting point propylene-based resin followed by foaming by inducing thermal decomposition of the thermally decomposing chemical foaming agent, and a compounding ratio of the low melting point propylene-based resin in the entire resin component formed of the high melting point propylene-based resin and the low melting point propylene-based resin is less than 20% by mass.

A particulate polymeric composition capable of being processed to provide expanded articles having a density lower than or equal to 50 g/l and a closed cell content of at least 60% as specified by ASTM D-2856, wherein resulting particulates have a shape factor ranging from 0.6 to 0.99; and wherein the particulate polymeric composition is produced according to a process that prepares expandable granules based on thermoplastic polymers, through a granulation die.
Abstract:
Fluoropolymer foams are prepared by mixing fluoropolymer resin with blowing agents and additives to produce foamable compounds at temperatures below the activation temperature of the blowing agent. The compounded material is expanded at temperatures above both the softening point of the fluoropolymer resin and the activation temperature of the blowing agent. The resulting fluoropolymer foam can be fabricated into any desired shape, such as pipes, sheets, tapes, blocks and rods, using techniques such as cutting, welding, thermoforming and adhesive bonding. Alternatively the fluoropolymer compound may be expanded directly into the desired shape, for example, by expanding the compound in a mold.
