Abstract:
A steel cord used for reinforcing rubber product with an oval cross-section has a structure of m+n, while m is the number of core wires (26) and n is the number of the outer layer wires (22). The core wire (26) is untwisted while m is 1 or the core wires (26) are untwisted and aligned in parallel while m is between 2 and 4, and the outer layer wires (22) are twisted around said core wires (26). The core wires (26) are oval wires and the outer layer wires (22) are round wires. The wires (22, 26) in the steel cord have a carbon content not less than 0.60%.

Abstract:
In a composite of vulcanizable rubber or rubber-like composition with one or more metal reinforcement elements embedded therein, the metal reinforcement element is coated with a polymer or non-cured rubber composition compatible with and co-polymerizable, co-vulcanizable or crosslinkable with said vulcanizable ruber composition to be reinforced, and additionally bearing functional groups either covalently bonding to the metal surface of said reinforcement element or forming covalent bonds with the outward directed first functional groups of a mono- or multimolecular layer of a bifunctional adhesion promoter intercalated between said metal and said coating and bound to said metal by its second functional groups. A cured rubber or rubber-like product, for instance a pneumatic tire, is obtained by vulcanization of such a composite.

Provided are a rubber article reinforcing steel wire that is superior in bending fatigue properties to the related art and has a flat cross-sectional shape, and a rubber article using the wire. In a rubber article reinforcing steel wire 10, a major diameter and a minor diameter are substantially perpendicular to each other. Assuming that the major diameter is W, the minor diameter is T, a straight line that passes through a center of the major diameter in a width direction and is parallel to a minor diameter direction is L1, a straight line that passes through a center of the minor diameter in a width direction and is parallel to a major diameter direction is L2, an intersection point of the L1 and the L2 is a center point C, a region within a half of a distance from the center point C to a surface is a central region Rc, and a region outside the central region Rc is a surface layer region Rs, a Vickers hardness Hvc of the central region Rc is more than a Vickers hardness Hvs of the surface layer region Rs; and assuming that a Vickers hardness on the L1 in the surface layer region Rs is Hv1, and a Vickers hardness on the L2 in the surface layer region Rs is Hv2, relationships represented by Hvc−Hv1≦150, Hvc−Hv2≦150, Hv1/Hvc×100≧85.11, and Hv2/Hvc×100≧79.84 are satisfied.
Abstract:
A coated metal reinforcement element for polymeric or elastomeric materials comprises a coating of: a polymer or prepolymer compatible with and co-polymerizable, co-vulcanizable or crosslinkable with said polymeric or elastomeric material to be reinforced, and bearing functional groups; either covalently bonding to the metal surface of said reinforcement element; or forming covalent bonds with the outward directed first functional groups of a mono-or multimolecular layer of a bifunctional adhesion promotor intercalated between said metal by its second functional groups. A method for the coating includes a one step and a two step procedure.
Abstract:
A reinforcing structure designed for handling compression stress states when the structure is molded into a composite. The structure, specifically a wrapped cord with metallic filaments contained therein, is suitable for both compression and tension load forces. The reinforcing structure has a core comprising a plurality of essentially straight, nested filaments arranged in parallel, the filaments forming a line of contact with adjacent filaments that extends along the length of the filaments. Wrapped about the core is at least one helically wound wire.

Abstract:
A pneumatic tire reinforced by a reinforcing belt is provided, the reinforcing belt having at least one cord reinforced ply, and, in turn, the cord reinforced ply having a plurality of substantially parallel spaced apart elongated cross-section reinforcing cords. The ply may be a bias ply in which the reinforcing cords are disposed at a bias angle, or it may be an overlay ply being axially longer than any other plies and having curving ends which overlay and curve over the ends of any other plies to strengthen shoulder portions of the pneumatic tire. Preferably, in the case of an overlay ply, the reinforcing cords are disposed substantially circumferentially. Preferably also, the elongated cross-section of the reinforcing cords is elliptic; and, the reinforcing cords are thermoplastic monofilaments formed by extrusion.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a tire-reinforcing steel cord for a radial tire. The tire-reinforcing steel cord has a double layer structure including a first-layer core and a second-layer core provided on the surface of the first-layer core. The first-layer core has an elliptical or rectangular cross section. The tire-reinforcing steel cord can improve processability, fatigue characteristics, and rolling resistance performance of a tire, resulting in improved fuel efficiency. A radial tire using the tire-reinforcing steel cord is also disclosed.
