Abstract:
A system and assembly for modifying a diesel powered electric generator preferably of the reciprocating engine type to the extent that the generator is capable of running on either 100% diesel fuel or in a “bi-fuel” mode which is defined as a mixture of methane based gas and diesel fuel. The system and associated assembly is specifically designed to provide for the automatic or manual switching between the full diesel mode and the gas-diesel fuel or bi-fuel mode for continuous generator operation without interruption in generator output and at substantially equivalent or comparable efficiency levels. A gas control sub-assembly is included for controlling the amount of gas supplied to the driving engine of the generator while operating in the bi-fuel mode, a diesel control sub-assembly is included and designed for controlling the amount of diesel fuel supply to the driving engine while operating in the bi-fuel mode, and an electronic control an monitoring sub-assembly is included and designed for controlling various components of the overall system and is further structured to monitor and display certain data associated with operation and continuous current output within pre-determined, acceptable parameters.
Abstract:
A control box (11) for a dual-fuel internal-combustion engine (6) is actuated automatically by an oil-pressure switch (16) when activated by a manual switch (30) that directs power from a battery (29) or other engine-electrical component to a current distributor such as a 24-volt bus (49) for operating control-box components that include an under-current sensor (36) for preventing use of gaseous fuel in addition to liquid fuel under no-load and low-load conditions, an over-current sensor (39) for preventing use of gaseous fuel in addition to liquid fuel under excessive-load conditions, an intake-air sensor (17) for preventing use of gaseous fuel with liquid fuel when there is inadequate supply of air, a liquid-fuel-supply sensor (22) for preventing use of gaseous fuel with liquid fuel when there is inadequate supply of liquid fuel, and an exhaust-gas-temperature monitor (23) for shutting down dual-fuel mode when exhaust heat is excessive. Red LED lights (41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46) warn of system faults. The engine does not shut down when one or more parameters fail. Professional resetting is required in order to alert operators of possible dangers when the system has been shut down from excessive exhaust-gas heat.
Abstract:
A dual fuel engine system and method of operating the engine reduces emission rates of polutants. The dual fuel engine includes a fuel oil supply connected to the engine and a fuel gas supply connected to the engine. Means connected between the fuel oil supply and the engine inject low levels of diesel fuel into the engine. In particular, the injection of diesel fuel is limited to pilot injection quantities only. The exhaust emission of NOx is maintained at less than 1 GM/HP-HR, where natural gas is used as the primary fuel, and less than 0.5 GM/HP-HR where digester gas is used as the primary fuel.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein is a plant that supplies a diesel oil-gas fuel mixture to diesel cycle engines and comprises: a device for interrupting the travel of the lever that controls the injection pump and is connected to the accelerator; and a mixer group placed along the manifold for the induction of air to the cylinders, comprising two separate parallel pipes, the first of which provided with a first throttle valve movable between two extreme positions, namely a position for opening the air passage when the engine is running on diesel oil and a position for closing the air passage when the engine is running on a mixture of diesel oil and gas, and the second of which provided with a Venturi tube and with a second throttle valve for blocking the air passage, movable continuously and connected to the accelerator, the said Venturi tube being connected to a pipe for the supply of the gas at low pressure; the said pipes being jointly provided with an air passage area at least identical to that required for maximum engine air induction.
Abstract:
Various methods and systems are provided for engine startup. In one example, a method for an engine includes injecting a fuel mixture with a proportion of a first fuel to a second fuel to decrease carbon emissions, in response to detection of or request for the engine to start. The proportion of the first fuel to the second fuel in the injected fuel mixture is decreased in response to engine speed reaching an idling speed. The first fuel may be a non-hydrocarbon-based fuel and the second fuel may be a hydrocarbon-based fuel.
Abstract:
A system has an engine. The engine has a combustion chamber, a pre-combustion chamber apart from the combustion chamber, and an opening spanning between the combustion chamber and the pre-combustion chamber. The engine also has a first fuel supply system adapted to supply liquid fuel to the pre-combustion chamber and a second fuel supply system adapted to supply a second, different fuel to the combustion chamber. In certain instances, an oxygen supply system supplies oxygen into the prechamber.
Abstract:
A system to supply hydrogen-rich fuel to an internal combustion engine, whereby a hydrogen-rich gas is produced from a liquid raw fuel by a hydrogen generator. The exhaust line of the internal combustion engine contains an exhaust purification system, such as a DeNOx catalytic converter, which is at least temporarily supplied with hydrogen-rich gas through a bypass line. In addition, the exhaust line is in thermal contact with the hydrogen generator in order to recover thermal energy.
Abstract:
A kit and method for converting a compression ignition diesel engine into a spark ignition natural gas engine is disclosed. The kit includes a throttle body, a fuel management system, a timing module, a means for reducing a compression ratio of a piston in the diesel engine, and a means for providing a spark in a cylinder of the natural gas engine. The method includes the steps of providing a diesel engine, machining one or more cylinder heads on the diesel engine to accept one or more spark plugs, machining a top surface of one or more pistons of the diesel engine to increase the volume of the one or more combustion chambers when the one or more pistons are located at top dead center in the diesel engine, providing a fuel management system to deliver the air/fuel mixture to the one or more combustion chambers, and providing a timing module to monitor the position of one or more camshafts on the diesel engine and provide piston position information to the fuel management system.
Abstract:
A method of converting a diesel engine to a natural gas engine comprising inserting a spark plug into a diesel fuel injector opening in a cylinder head; installing a throttle body on the diesel engine; installing a throttle body adaptor between a throttle body and an intake manifold of said diesel engine; and modifying a piston, whereby the compression ratio of said piston is decreased during operation of said piston. The method also includes installation of a waste gate and waste gate adaptor and a timing mask.
Abstract:
A method of operating an engine assembly having a cylinder assembly which defines a combustion chamber is disclosed. The method includes the steps of performing an intake stroke of the cylinder assembly and advancing a conditioning fuel into the combustion chamber during the intake stroke performing step. The method further includes the steps of advancing a gaseous fuel into the combustion chamber during the intake stroke performing step and performing a compression stroke of the cylinder assembly after the intake stroke performing step. The method yet further includes the steps of advancing a pilot fuel into the combustion chamber during the compression stroke performing step and combusting the pilot fuel in the combustion chamber during the compression stroke performing step so as to ignite the conditioning fuel and the gaseous fuel. The gaseous fuel and the conditioning fuel are mixed in the combustion chamber prior to the pilot fuel advancing step so as to facilitate ignition of the gaseous fuel in the combustion chamber.
