An estimation device applicable to a combustion system having an internal combustion engine includes a mixing acquisition unit, a combustion amount estimation unit, a region estimation unit, and a timing estimation unit. The mixing acquisition unit acquires a mixing ratio of various components contained in fuel used for combustion in the internal combustion engine. The combustion amount estimation unit estimates a combustion amount of fuel caused by a post combustion generated by injecting fuel into a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine by post injection, based on the mixing ratio acquired by the mixing acquisition unit. The region estimation unit estimates a combustion region of the post combustion in the combustion chamber based on the mixing ratio. The timing estimation unit estimates an ignition timing at which ignition occurs in the combustion chamber by the post injection based on the mixing ratio.

The present invention discloses a method of introducing fuel into a diesel engine for combustion within the engine. A natural gas in liquid form is injected into the engine for combustion therein with diesel fuel so as to maintain a natural gas concentration derived from the liquid in the range of greater than 0.6% to 3.0% of air intake by volume of natural gas. Suitable gases include natural gas, methane or substantially methane gas mixtures and substitute natural gas such as propane air mixtures providing a mixture with similar combustion properties to methane/natural gas.

A method, apparatus, and system to measure, record, and control exhaust products from an internal combustion engine (ICE) are disclosed. Measurements of the exhaust products of an ICE are recorded and made available. The measurements provide the inputs for one of a variety of different algorithms to determine the proper flow rates for a first and a for second fuel being feed to an ICE to achieve one or more goals relating to at least one of the measured exhaust products. These flow rates are then enforced to control the exhaust products.

Disclosed is a system including a fuel conversion device for use with a conventional internal combustion engine having an engine control unit and electronic fuel injectors allowing a conventional vehicle to operate using more than one type of fuel. The system intercepts the ECU's command signals being transmitted to the injectors before they reach the injectors and modifies the signals for optimizing the combustion cycle depending upon the type of fuel used. The conversion device enables a conventional gasoline engine to run on an alternative fuel such as alcohol, gasoline, or any combination of the two.

A warming increase coefficient is computed by use of the pseudo coolant temperature. A control system for an engine capable of operating on more than one type of fuel includes an engine control unit that determines a default fuel volume to be injected into the engine based on relevant engine parameters and characteristics of a default fuel type. A default mass fuel flow rate is derived from the default fuel volume and relevant engine parameters. The actual mass fuel flow rate into the engine is inferred from the mass air flow rate into the engine and the exhaust gas air-to-fuel ratio, which is determined using a wide range oxygen sensor. A fuel correction factor is calculated from the default mass fuel flow rate and the inferred mass fuel flow rate. The fuel correction factor is used to increment or decrement the default fuel volume in a subsequent fuel injection cycle thereby incrementing or decrementing the inferred mass fuel flow rate toward the default mass fuel flow rate.

A system and method is provided for use with a duel-fuel fumigation system. The system injects a gaseous-fuel flow into the air intake stream of a diesel engine. As presented, the system is operative to meter the gaseous-fuel flow into the diesel engine based on one or more engine parameters such as, for example, exhaust gas temperature, exhaust oxygen levels, engine speed, engine load and/or engine inlet pressure. Monitoring one or more engine parameters allows fine-tuning the flow of gaseous fuel into the engine and thereby prevents loss of engine power at high-end loads while maintaining favorable emission outputs over substantially the entire operating range of the engine.
