The light source may include a means for narrowing the linewidth of the pump beam. The light source includes an optical parametric oscillator with an optical cavity containing a crystal. The novel laser gain medium includes a host material, a plurality of quantum dots dispersed throughout the host material, and a plurality of laser active ions surrounding each of the quantum dots. The laser active ions are disposed in close proximity to the quantum dots such that energy absorbed by the quantum dots is non-radiatively transferred to the ions via a Forster resonant energy transfer, thereby exciting the ions to produce laser output. In an illustrative embodiment, each quantum dot is surrounded by an external shell doped with the laser active ions.

The present embodiment provides a system and method for lowering the saturated gain level of a thin-disk laser oscillator by multipassing each gain generator in such a way to cancel some of the wavefront error contributions from the disk surfaces. Wavefront aberrations introduced on one pass of the gain disk are canceled through symmetry on successive passes. The reduced wavefront error significantly improves design space for single-mode resonators. Maximum effectiveness is achieved by rotating the gain disk so that the fold plane-of-symmetry reverses the largest wavefront error or specifically chosen functional forms.

A stages bracket includes first and second portions operatively coupled to, respectively, the threaded extender and the cam bearing surface to impart concurrent movement of the stages bracket in orthogonal directions in response to rotation of the cam shaft. The threaded extender provides longitudinal displacement as the cam bearing surface portion provides lateral displacement, to the stages bracket. A target specimen, such as an optical element, is typically mounted to the stages bracket and moves in concert with it.

Geometrical design of laser microchips is disclosed that allows variation of the optical path length in the different media by simple displacement of the microchip, the movement having a non-zero projection orthogonal to the pump beam. The concept can be implemented to vary optical loss in the lasing cavity, the absorbed pump power, or the optical length of the cavity. Passively Q-switched microchip laser output performance can thus be controlled by simple transverse displacement of the microchip relative to the pump beam. The above microlaser can be combined with voltage-controlled variable-focus output optics in order to control the peak power density of the laser pulses.

In a laser light generating device, the stability against vibration and time-dependent changes will be improved, and influences of temperature changes exerted on the resonator will be reduced. In a laser light generating device (1) which includes an excitation light source (2) for generating a continuous-wave excitation light and a solid-state laser resonator (4) based on using thermal lens effect caused by heat generation at a position of excitation, the solid-state laser resonator further includes a laser medium (4a), a saturable absorber (4b), an intermediate medium (4c) and reflection means (4d) as the constituents. Influence of vibration is reduced by bonding a substrate of the laser medium (4a) and a substrate of the saturable absorber (4b) so as to integrate them. By adopting a configuration which does not need any method of selecting operating point based on temperature changes and is less susceptible to heat, and by relatively moving the excitation optical system and the resonator in the positional relation of the both to thereby adjust the light path length of the resonator, so as to make it possible to select a stable operating point.
