Abstract: An optical system comprises a lightguide having an elongated recess formed therein. The recess divides the lightguide into a first lightguide section a second larger lightguide section. Light extractors are disposed in the second, but not the first, lightguide section for extracting light that would otherwise propagate within and along the second lightguide section via total internal reflection (TIR). The depth of the recess varies along its length. The inclusion of a recess having a depth that varies along its length provides design flexibility in the number and location of light source(s) used by the optical system.

Abstract: Retroreflective articles include a layer of optical elements, and a bead bond layer (140). The optical elements include transparent microspheres (110), a transparent polymeric polyurethane layer (120), and at least one reflective layer (130), where the transparent polymeric polyurethane layer (120) comprises a dried layer prepared from an aqueous polyurethane dispersion. The retroreflective articles have improved wash durability.

Abstract: An ionic diol has formula wherein R1 represents an alkyl group having from 6 to 18 carbon atoms; R2 and R3 independently represent alkyl groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; R4 represents an alkylene group having from 2 to 8 carbon atoms; and R5 represents an alkylene group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms. Antistatic polymers are formed by copolymerization of monomers including a diisocyanate, an ionic diol, a polyether diol, and at least one non-ionic diols. Methods of making the antistatic polyurethanes are also disclosed.

Abstract: Described herein is composite article comprising a substrate; and on at least one face of the substrate a multilayered coating disposed thereon. The multilayered coating comprises (i) an abrasion-resistant layer adjacent to the substrate, wherein the abrasion-resistant layer comprises inorganic oxide nanoparticles and a polymer binder; and (ii) an antireflection layer adjacent to the abrasion-resistant layer opposite the substrate, wherein the antireflection layer comprises a fluorosilane polymer, wherein the fluorosilane polymer comprises: at least one monomeric unit A represented by the formula (I) wherein R1 represents H or methyl, L1 represents a covalent bond or a divalent aliphatic group having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, each Y1 independently represents a hydrocarbyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, each Y2 independently represents a hydrolyzable group, g is 0, 1, or 2; and at least one divalent monomeric unit B represented by the formula (I) wherein R2, R3, and R4 represent H, methyl, trifluoromethyl, or F, wherein at least one of R2, R3, and R4 is F, Rf1 represents a covalent bond or a divalent group selected from the group consisting of —(CF2O)a—, —(CF2CF2O)b—, —(CF2CF2CF2O)c—, —(CF2CF2CF2CF2O)d—, —(CF2CF(CF3)O)e—, and combinations thereof, wherein a, b, c, d, and e represent integers in the range of from 0 to 130, and wherein 1≤a+b+c+d+e≤130, and Rf2 is a perfluoroalkyl group.

Abstract: Provided compositions, films, and methods impart a low-surface energy surface to a polyurethane layer whereby contaminants to bead up on the surface to dramatically facilitate removal. At the same time, the provided articles retain excellent clarity and processibility for use in surface protection applications. Compositions having these advantageous properties derive from reacting a primary polyisocyanate; a monohydroxyl polydimethylsiloxane present in a suitable amount; and a polyol selected from the group consisting of: a caprolactone polyol, polycarbonate polyol, a polyester polyol, acrylic polyol, polyether polyol, polyolefin polyol, and mixtures thereof.

Abstract: An OLED display including a display panel and a color-correction component is described. A plurality of comparative display panels otherwise equivalent to the display panel but having one or more different optical thicknesses of OLED layers have a maximum white-point color shift from 0 to 45 degrees of WPCSC45 and a white-point axial efficiency of WPAEC. The plurality of comparative display panels defines a performance curve along a boundary of performance points. The OLED display and the display panel have respective maximum white-point color shifts from 0 to 45 degrees of WPCS45 and WPCS045 and respective white-point axial efficiencies of WPAE and WPAE0. WPCS045 and WPAE0 defines a performance point of the display panel to the right of the performance curve and WPCS45 and WPAE defines a performance point of the OLED display above or to the left of the performance curve. Methods of making the OLED display are described.

Abstract: There is provided a pressure sensitive adhesive composition comprising a polyurethane polymer that comprises the reaction product of a polyisocyanate component and a polyol component. The polyol component has a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) less than 10. The polyurethane further comprises 0.5 to 10 wt.-% of hydrophilic polymerized units having an HLB greater than 12, such as a reaction product of a polyethylene glycol polymer. In another embodiment, the polyurethane further comprises pendent ethylenically unsaturated groups. Also described are articles such as laminating tapes and protective films as well as methods of bonding substrates with the pressure sensitive adhesive and laminating tape.

Abstract: A unitary lightguide including a first lightguide section extending along a first direction and a second lightguide section extending along a second direction is described. The second lightguide section includes a plurality of light extractors for extracting light that would otherwise propagate within and along the second lightguide section. The unitary lightguide includes a boundary region disposed between and joining the first and second lightguide sections and including a plurality of spaced apart light redirecting features. Each light redirecting feature includes a first portion extending substantially parallel to the first direction, and a second portion extending from proximate the first end of the first portion toward the second lightguide section and making an angle with the first portion in a range from about 10 degrees to about 70 degrees.
