摘要: A microfluidic cartridge that includes at least one reservoir for storing a reagent or the like for an extended period of time. In one illustrative embodiment, at least part of a wall of a reservoir includes a hydrophobic material, such as a polymonochlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE) homopolymer and/or copolymer. The hydrophobic material may help reduce leaching, evaporation, diffusion and/or other transfer of the reagent or one of its components from the reservoir. When the reagent or the like is lyophilized, the hydrophobic material may help keep water, water vapor and/or other gases or liquids from entering the reservoir prior to use of the microfluidic cartridge.

摘要: The present disclosure relates generally to locating systems, and more particularly, to handheld locator systems for locating personnel or other objects in buildings or other environments. In one illustrative embodiment, a tag is attached to an object to be located (e.g. firefighter). The tag may be configured to emit a first signal and a second signal, where the first signal and the second signal having disparate propagation characteristics in the environment. In some cases, the first signal may be an acoustic signal and the second signal may be an RF signal, but this is not required in all embodiments. By using a first signal or set of signals, and then automatically switching to another signal or set of signal(s) when the first signal or set of signals are not received clearly, the tag/receiver system may help mitigate the failure modes/weaknesses of any single technology, and may provide advantages over use of any of the technologies used singly.

摘要: An electrostatically actuated valve that is relatively small, has relatively low fabrication costs, and consumes relatively low voltage and/or power. Normally closed, normally open, three (or more) way valves, and other configurations are contemplated. These electrostatically actuated valves are suitable for a wide variety of applications, including but not limited to, low power and wireless applications, for example.

摘要: An electrostatic actuator device and method for actuating the device. The device includes a pair of actuator plates having electrodes for conducting a voltage potential thereto and at least one of the pair being movable with respect to the other. The plates are positioned to move upon application of a voltage potential through electrodes attached thereto. A driving means provides a voltage potential to the electrodes to cause the movement of the at least one plate. The driving means produces compound AC signal with rise/fall sections at least 10 to 100 times (preferably more than twenty times) the mechanical response time of the actuator. The preferred AC signals are selected from square-wave, sine wave, triangle wave and mixtures thereof. The preferred circuit produces rise/fall sections that are a quarter of a full period of the AC wave signal, and only the nominal section of the compound AC signal is used for driving the actuator. Preferred is an actuation cycle having a rise section with the signal amplitude increasing from zero to the desired final value through a plurality of individual periods of the a AC signal and a fall section with the signal amplitude decreasing from a nominal final value to zero through a similar plurality of individual periods of basic AC signal. The specific frequency of the square wave AC signal and the rise fall times of the amplitude modulation is adjusted to minimize stiction between said actuator plates.

摘要: A microactuator array device, which includes a plurality of generally parallel thin flexible polymer sheets bonded together in a predetermined pattern to form an array of unit cells on at least one layer. Thin conductive and dielectric films are deposited on the sheets to form a plurality of electrodes associated with the array of unit cells. A source of electric potential operably connects the electrodes, whereby electrostatic forces are generated most intensely proximate the point where the gap between the sheets is smallest. Inlets and outlets for each cell permit displacement of fluid during generation of the electrostatic forces. In a preferred embodiment, the plurality of sheets forms a stack of layers of arrays of unit cells. The layers are configured such that bi-directional activation is caused by pairs of actuators working opposite each other. At least one of every pair of the sheets may be preformed into corrugations or into flaps to provide a predetermined mechanical bias between the pairs, or the sheets may form curved portions by an applied load to provide a displacement between the pairs. The sheets are preferably from about 1 &mgr;m to about 100 &mgr;m thick and the cells preferably have an individual displacement of from about 5 &mgr;m to about 200 &mgr;m.
