Certain example embodiments of this invention relate to coated articles that include anti-reflective (AR) coatings produced from colloidal silica with variable size particles in formulation, and/or methods of making the same. In certain example embodiments, the AR coatings advantageously exhibit high transmission, high transmission gain with respect to uncoated articles, and high b* values, before and/or after heat treatment. The AR coatings of certain example embodiments may be temperable or otherwise heat treatable (e.g., at temperatures of 500 degrees C. or greater) together with their supporting substrates. In certain example embodiments, the particle size for the colloidal silica is 10-110 nm, and the b* values are at least about 0.8. Certain example embodiments may be used in connection with photovoltaic devices and/or the like.

A system and method for targeted, remote switching of electrical appliances. The system includes a transmitter for selectively producing a directional output signal and a receiver for detecting the directional output signal from the transmitter. The receiver produces an output signal when the directional output signal from the transmitter is detected that is received by a microcontroller that is incorporated into a switch controller. The microcontroller produces an output that switches the electrical appliance to which the switch controller is connected on and/or off. A coordinator is provided for communicating functional information to and from the switch controller(s) of a plurality of electrical appliances for increased flexibility of operation and control. Although not limited to this use, the system and method of the present invention are particularly adapted for controlling individual light fixtures, even though several fixtures are wired into a single circuit, allowing the individual fixtures to be switched on and/or off as needed and, in the case of light fixtures with multiple lamps, the dimming of the fixture by switching individual lamps in the fixture off.

A major surface of an anti-reflection coating may be treated with a silane-based solution so as to increase the contact angle of the coating's surface. The silane-based solution may include silane(s) having alkyl and/or fluoroalkyl functional groups. The treatment of the major surface of the AR coating may include chemically grafting the surface of the coating such that the silanes and functional groups bond to an outermost portion of the coating. The presence of the silanes and/or the functional groups may lower the surface energy of the coating. The lowered surface energy and/or intrinsic roughness of the AR coating may cause the contact angle of the coating to rise to hydrophobic and/or super hydrophobic levels, such that the hydrophobic AR coating possesses anti-fogging and/or anti-fouling properties.

Certain example embodiments of this invention relate to a method of forming a coating on a glass substrate using combustion deposition. A glass substrate having at least one surface to be coated is provided. A reagent is selected. A precursor to be combusted with the reagent is introduced. Using at least one infrared burner, at least a portion of the reagent and the precursor are combusted to form a combusted material, with the combusted material including non-vaporized material. The glass substrate is provided in an area so that the glass substrate is heated sufficiently to allow the combusted material to form the coating, directly or indirectly, on the glass substrate. The coating may be substantially uniform. In certain example embodiments, a silicon oxide coating may be deposited, which increases visible transmission of the glass substrate by at least about 1.7%.

The material includes a substrate having a surface coating including a polyamine compound. The present invention provides a method and reagent composition for attachment of target molecules onto the surface of a substrate, such as microwell plates, tubes, beads, microscope slides, silicon wafers or membranes. In one embodiment, the method and composition are used to immobilize nucleic acid probes onto plastic materials such as microwell plates, e.g., for use in hybridization assays. In a preferred embodiment, the method and composition are adapted for use with substantially flat surfaces, such as those provided by microscope slides and other plastic, silicon hydride, or organosilane-pretreated glass or silicone slide support surfaces.
