One embodiment in accordance with the present invention includes a capacitive sensing device for use in a keypad assembly of an electronic system. The capacitive sensing device includes a substantially transparent single sheet capacitive sensor. The substantially transparent single sheet capacitive sensor is configured to be disposed within the keypad assembly without requiring the formation of key post holes therethrough. Additionally, the substantially transparent single sheet capacitive sensor has a flexibility which enables desired tactile response during use of keys of the keypad assembly.

The present invention comprises a signal generator for sending an electrical signal from an expandable, flexible layer of material, the signal generator comprising an upper layer of flexible, resilient material and a lower layer of flexible, resilient material which between them define a cavity for enclosing an expandable material such as a cellular foam or gas, whereupon localized distortion of one of the layers of flexible material, effects a signal generation within the structure, which is transmissible through a proper circuit to an outside electrical device. A keyboard switch apparatus for an electronic musical instrument has first, second and third layers, and first and second switches. The second layer has elasticity and is separated from the first layer. The third layer has elasticity and is inserted between the first and second layers at a distance therefrom. The first switch consists of conductors respectively formed on opposite surfaces of the second and third layers. The second switch consists of conductors respectively formed on opposite surfaces of the first and third layers. The second and third layers are sequentially urged and deformed by an actuator interlocked with key depression. The first and second switches are sequentially closed. A time requred for closing the first switch is different from that for closing the second switch. The closure time difference corresponds to a key depression speed, which is used to generate a signal corresponding to the depression speed, and a musical tone signal corresponding to the depression speed.
