An apparatus (10) for controlling the road speed of a motor vehicle has an accelerator pedal (12), which is biased counter to its actuating direction into an inoperative position and is movable from the inoperative position into a neutral position, from which a further movement of the accelerator pedal (12) counter to the spring bias leads to an increase of the drive torque of the motor vehicle drive. A device for detecting the inoperative position of the accelerator pedal (12) is connected to a braking-force generator (40) and in the inoperative position of the accelerator pedal (12) causes the braking-force generator (40) to make a predetermined braking force available. In order to make the apparatus (10) more comfortable, according to an alternative the braking-force generator (40) builds up the predetermined braking force in a controlled manner when the accelerator pedal (12) attains its inoperative position, and/or reduces the built-up braking force in a controlled manner when the accelerator pedal (12) leaves its inoperative position. According to another alternative, the device for detecting the inoperative position of the accelerator pedal (12), upon a movement of the accelerator pedal (12) from the inoperative position into the neutral position, causes the braking-force generator (40) to reduce the predetermined braking force in accordance with the accelerator pedal movement and vice versa.

The upper limit pressure increase amount of braking pressure is corrected so that it is greater if the speed reduction ratio of the transmission is smaller. If the amount of pressure change of requested braking pressure is excessively high, and the amount of increase in braking pressure needs to be limited, the amount of pressure change of braking pressure is limited to the corrected upper limit pressure increase amount.

A shift control and shift strategy for an automatic transmission in an automotive vehicle driveline wherein the automatic ratio shift schedule can be disabled selectively to accommodate a manual ratio shift control. A driver-operated mode selection switch permits the operator to select normal automatic ratio control or a launch-assist mode during operation in the normal ratio shift mode. Ratio changes occur in response to driveline operating variables in a vehicle launch-assist mode. The transmission control system is commanded to effect a high speed ratio when the vehicle is stationary with the brakes applied. The operating mode defaults to a normal ratio shift mode as the operator releases the wheel brakes. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the control includes multiple enable switches for achieving manual selection of the ratios when a manual upshift sequence is desired.

The clutch further includes an output pin having a first portion disposed between the first and second brake shoes and a second portion disposed within an opening of an output member. Finally, the inventive clutch includes a hardened insert disposed within each of the slots in the arcuate surfaces of the brakes shoes. The inserts each include a groove formed therein which channels a lubricant within the clutch away from the frictional interface of the insert and the inner surface of the outer race.
