Abstract: The internal combustion engine has an internal combustion engine main body and a substantially columnar ignition coil. A head part at one end of the ignition coil is provided with an electromagnetic wave element for outputting electromagnetic waves irradiated into a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine main body, and a plurality of supporting components are provided for supporting the ignition coil when an attaching part at the other end of the ignition coil is attached to a spark plug, the supporting components supporting the ignition coil either at or near a nodal point in a characteristic vibration mode of vibration occurring in the ignition coil along with vibration of the internal combustion engine main body. The ignition coil is not supported on the side toward the head part relative to the support member nearest the head part.

Abstract: An ignition plug capable of improving ignition performance while preventing pre-ignition includes a center electrode, a bottomed cylindrical insulator enclosing a front end portion of the center electrode and a cylindrical metal shell holding therein the insulator. The insulator has, on a front end side thereof, a protruding portion protruding from and located frontward of a front end of the metal shell. In the ignition plug, a difference between an outer diameter of the center electrode and an inner diameter of the insulator is 0.01 mm or more; an axial length of the protruding portion is 6.7 mm to 12.7 mm; and the following condition is satisfied: 1.07≤S/V1≤1.35 where S is an outer surface area of the protruding portion; and V1 is a volume of the protruding portion.

Abstract: An electronic control unit of an internal combustion engine is configured to control the fuel injection valve and to control a spark plug if necessary such that fuel is combusted by pre-mixture compression ignition combustion or flame propagation combustion. The electronic control unit is configured to perform homogeneous combustion in a flame ignition operation range when switching failure has not occurred, the homogeneous combustion being combustion in which fuel homogeneously diffused into the combustion chamber is ignited using the spark plug and is combusted by flame propagation combustion. The electronic control unit is configured to perform spray-guided stratified combustion in a second operation range when the switching failure has occurred, the spray-guided stratified combustion being combustion in which fuel in the fuel injection path is ignited using the spark plug and is combusted by the flame propagation combustion.

Abstract: An object is to achieve stable diesel combustion and improvement in the thermal efficiency of the diesel combustion in an internal combustion engine using a fuel having a relatively high self-ignition temperature. A control apparatus for an internal combustion engine includes a fuel injection valve capable of injecting fuel into a combustion chamber and an ignition device whose position relative to the fuel injection valve is set in such a way that it can ignite fuel spray directly. The apparatus performs pre-injection at a predetermined pre-injection time during the compression stroke and main injection at a predetermined injection start time after pre-spray formed by the pre-injection is ignited by the ignition device, thereby causing self-ignition to occur and causing at least a portion of the main-injected fuel to burn by diffusion combustion. When the quantity of the pre-injected fuel is increased, the pre-injection time is advanced responsive to the increase in the quantity of the pre-injected fuel.

Abstract: An ignition apparatus for an internal combustion engine includes: a spark plug; a first ignition coil and a second ignition coil; a battery; a booster circuit that boosts a voltage supplied from the battery; a power transistor that conducts and interrupts a primary current flowing to a primary coil included in the first ignition coil; a MOSFET that applies and interrupts the voltage boosted by the booster circuit to a primary coil included in the second ignition coil; and an ECU that starts electric discharge by the spark plug by controlling the power transistor, and repeatedly applies and interrupts the voltage boosted by the booster circuit by the MOSFET so that the electric discharge that is started is maintained.

Abstract: A multi-electrode spark plug having a large spark target volume is disclosed. The spark plugs have a plurality of ground electrode rods which extend from the base of the spark plug and are twisted around center electrode to provide a plurality of substantially equidistant spark points relative to the center electrode. The spark points are formed in parallel and around the elongated axis of the spark plug. This configuration enables the spark to be created where the localized concentration of fuel to air is richer, such as that which may exist when the engine is operating with lower revolutions per minute. Test results indicate that automobiles equipped with the multi-electrode spark plugs exhibit improved fuel economy, and substantially reduced emissions and air pollution.

Abstract: A plasma ignition device 20 includes a spark plug 100, a DC power supply 210, an AC power supply 220, and a coupling section 300. The coupling section 300 includes a capacitor 320 which electrically connects the AC power supply 220 to the spark plug 100. The coupling section 300 reduces the capacitance of the capacitor 320 in the second ignition mode in which transmission of AC power is halted, as compared with that in the first ignition mode in which AC power is transmitted to the spark plug 100.
