    Abstract: A method for imaging an object using a microscope includes obtaining axial response data, the axial response data representative of a relationship between a separation between a top surface of the object and an objective lens of the microscope and an intensity of light reflected by the top surface of the object; positioning the object at a distance from the objective lens that is within a linear region of the axial response data; sequentially illuminating the object with a plurality of periodic patterns; obtaining a plurality of images of the object, each image resulting from the illumination of the object with a corresponding one of the plurality of periodic patterns; determining a reconstructed image of the object based on the plurality of images of the object; and, based on variations in the intensity of the reconstructed image, determining a topographic profile of the top surface of the object.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a series of 2,3-bis(hydroxymethyl)-4H-benzo[d]pyrrolo-[1,2-a]thiazoles and 1,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)indolizino[6,7-b]indole derivatives and their bis(alkylcarbamates) derivatives. These derivatives were designed as bi-functional DNA cross-linking agents. The in vitro cytotoxicity study of these compounds revealed that they exhibit significant anti-proliferative activity in inhibiting human lymphoblastic leukemia and various solid tumor cell growth. The compounds also exhibit therapeutic efficacy against human breast carcinoma and lung cancer in xenograft model. The compounds generally possess potent antitumor activity to kill various human solid tumors and have high potential for clinical applications.

    Abstract: A method for inhibiting survival of cancer cells in a subject is disclosed. The method comprises administering to a subject in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of fibrillar albumin. The preparation of the fibrillar albumin comprises: (i) forming a solution comprising an isolated and/or purified globular albumin; (ii) adding a detergent to the solution containing the isolated and/or purified globular albumin, wherein the detergent is one selected from the group consisting of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and n-tetradecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate; (iii) applying the solution to a molecular sizing column with a pore size that permits separation of a protein with a molecular weight of at least about 70 kDa so as to promote column-induced formation of the fibrillar albumin from the isolated and/or purified globular albumin; and (iv) eluting the fibrillar albumin from the column, wherein the eluted albumin has a fibrillar structure.

    Abstract: A precision high-speed shuttle device for transporting samples between different positions of a superconducting magnet with different magnetic field strength is provided. The sample equilibrated at the center of the magnet, where the magnetic field is the highest and homogeneous, is shuttled to a higher position above, where the fringe field is lower, for a defined period of time and shuttled back to the center for detection. By shuttling the sample to different positions in the magnet in different experiments one can obtain a field-dependent profile of particular physical parameters. The position and timing of the sample are precisely under the experimental controlled. In this way various magnetic field-dependent nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments can be conducted in a single high-field NMR spectrometer.
