    摘要: An additive for cationic electrodepositable coating compositions is disclosed which improves hiding ability, stability, rheology and oil spot resistance. The additive is present in amounts of between 0.5 to 40 weight percent and is prepared by polymerizing in aqueous medium, under free radically initiated conditions, an aqueous dispersion of a polymerizable, ethylenically unsaturated monomer composition in the presence of a cationic polymeric surface active substance. The coating composition additionally has between 60 to 99.5 weight percent of a cationic salt group containing film forming polymer. Also disclosed is a method for coating which includes electrodepositing the above composition on an electrically conductive cathode.

    摘要: Disclosed is an intumescent curable composition which contains as a resinous binder a flexible polyepoxide resin. The polyepoxide is cured with an appropriate curing agent adapted for the particular resin. An additive component is present which contains a mixture of materials which provide a source of(i) zinc,(ii) boron,(iii) phosphorus, and(iv) an expansion gas upon thermal decomposition. The composition is capable of forming a carbonaceous char upon exposure to heat or flame, with the proviso that the cured, unburned composition has sufficient flexibility that it passes at least 10 continuous cycles of a cold cycle test without cracking. The cold cycle test involves the following steps; the composition is applied at a thickness of 0.5 inch (12.7 millimeters) to a 10 inch (0.254 meter) section of a 4W13 I-beam having two thermocouples attached to the surface, allowed to cure at ambient temperature for 16 hours, force cured for 5 days at about 60.degree. C. an subjected to the cold cycle test. For one cycle, the beam is placed in a freezer operating at a temperature between about 0.degree. F. (-18.degree. C.) and about -10.degree. F. (-23.degree. C.) for sufficient time for the steel to reach a temperature between about 0.degree. F. (-18.degree. C.) and about (-10.degree. F.) -23.degree. C. as determined by the two thermocouples attached to the surface of the beam beneath the coating, removed from the freezer and a 50 square inch area 0.0323 square meter) of the surface warmed as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 by passing a heat gun (Model No. HG 50146, Alpha Division of Loral Corp, 14 amp; minimum temperature at tip 500.degree. F. (260.degree. C.) a distance of 0.5 inch (12.7 millimeter) from the surface, uniformly over the surface until the surface temperature reaches 110.degree. F. (43.degree. C.) within a 3 minute period, as determined by a thermocouple moved about the surface and allowed to stand for at least 2 hours at ambient temperature.

The substantially inorganic microparticles prior to incorporation in the coating composition range in size from about 1 to about 150 nanometers and are in the form of a sol of the microparticles in which the surface of the inorganic microparticles is essentially free of carbon-containing molecules chemically bonded to the inorganic microparticles.

    摘要: A catalyst and initiator composition for lactam polymerization is composed of a Grignard catalyst for lactam polymerization and initiator system containing(a) at least one material represented by the following structural formula: ##STR1## (b) at least one material represented by the following structural formula: ##STR2## wherein q and v are independently an integer of at least 1; Z and W are independently selected from a compound or polymeric material, said compound being composed of at least two elements in chemical combination which contain up to two repeating structural units, said polymeric material being a macromolecule formed by the chemical union of at least two coreactants and having at least three repeating structural units; with the proviso that at least a portion of either or both of the materials (a) or (b) is a polymeric material. In the above formulas, R, R', R", R'" are independently hydrogen, a C.sub.1 to C.sub.10 aliphatic radical, C.sub.3 to C.sub.10 cycloaliphatic radical, C.sub.6 to C.sub.10 aryl or alkaryl radical, and independently R and R" and the carbon to which each is attached are included as part of a cycloaliphatic or aromatic ring; and Y is an alkylene group having from 3 to 12 carbon atoms or an alkylene group having from 3 to 12 carbon atoms interrupted by a heteroatom. In addition the equivalent ratio of ##STR3## to th magnesium of the Grignard catalyst is within the range of from 0.3 to 1 to 4 to 1, and at least 10 percent of the initiator groups of initiator system are of the (a) type.

    摘要: The disclosed invention relates to films from a novel latex mixture which are non-porous, microcellular and opaque in the absence of an opacifying agent. The preparation of the films of the disclosed invention comprises providing control techniques for entrapping a sufficient amount of a liquid non-solvent for the polymer in the polymer matrix of a latex after the continuous phase removal, so that upon evaporation of the non-solvent from a coalesced and tack-free polymer matrix, a resulting opaque and continuous, non-porous film is produced which will have minute, discrete and substantially closed voids and which is opaque in the absence of an opacifying agent such as pigment.The disclosed invention also relates to opaque films with enhanced optical properties produced by the inclusion of pigments, fluorescent materials and optical brighteners in the opaque films in such a manner as to maximize their effectiveness therein.
