Abstract:
A process for effecting mass transfer between a liquid phase and a gaseous phase in a filled-type column comprising an external shell which accommodates at least one filler-containing basket wherethrough the phases are caused to flow in countercurrent relationship, advantageously comprises the step of feeding the gaseous phase to the at least one basket through a gas-permeable surface thereof which is larger than the basket cross-section, preferably in a prevailing radial flow direction.
Abstract:
An apparatus for the selective catalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide contained in a hydrogen-rich mixed gas flow, includes a reaction chamber filled with a catalyst and a cooling chamber through which a coolant flows formed between successive plates. The plates have openings that form inlet and outlet channels for the mixed gas flow and the coolant. An oxidizing gas is supplied directly into the inlet channel for the mixed gas flow. For two-stage apparatuses, a separating plate without an opening for the inlet channel for the mixed gas flow is arranged between the first and the second stage, and an apparatus for supplying the oxidizing gas to the second stage is passed into the outlet channel for the mixed gas flow from the first stage.
Abstract:
An elongate reaction vessel and process includes at least two stages in the vertical direction in which an endothermic or exothermic catalytic reaction is carried out and comprises: a catalytic reaction zone (12a, 12b) per stage (6, 7); introducing (2) a reaction fluid to a stage adapted for transverse motion of the fluid across the whole vertical extent of the reaction zone; introducing and extracting the catalyst; a heat exchanger (5a) for reaction fluids located inside the vessel between two successive reaction zones; means (6) for transporting reaction fluids from one stage to another preferably connected to the exchanger of the stage under consideration and to the inlet for reaction fluids of the subsequent stage; and means for recovering reaction fluids downstream of the last stage. The temperature variation in each zone and the temperature level are respectively adjusted by the thickness of each zone and by heat exchange.
Abstract:
The method for the esterification of a fatty acid F is carried out in a column with a packing. In addition to functioning as a catalytic reactor, the packing functions as a stripping section. A heteregenous catalysis of a fatty acid is carried out with an alcohol used in the same molar ratio or in excess. A gaseous alcohol-rich counter-flow is produced in a sump of the column by vaporisation. Water is removed from the reaction zone by means of the counter-flow acting as a stripping gas. The loaded stripping gas is at least partially liquefied at the head of the column. The head product is separated into a water-rich fraction as well as an alcohol-rich fraction. The alcohol-rich fraction is returned to the process as a starting material for the esterification and for the production of the stripping gas.
Abstract:
A reaction vessel for the production of synthesis gas that contains four subassemblies: (1) a first heat exchanger that transfers heat between two low pressure streams (an oxygen containing stream and an oxygen depleted stream); (2) a second heat exchanger that transfers heat between two high pressure fluid streams (a hydrocarbon-containing reactant stream and a synthesis gas product stream); (3) mixed conductor ceramic membranes; and (4) a catalyst bed. Each of these subassemblies are configured so that they freely expand or contract independently from each other, and to thus avoid inducing high mechanical loads and damaging material stresses.
Abstract:
An integrated reactor for producing fuel gas for a fuel cell, the integrated reactor comprises an waste gas oxidizer (WGO) assembly having an associated WGO chamber, an inlet, an outlet and a flow path for exothermic gases produced in the WGO chamber. The integrated reactor has an autothermal reactor (ATR) assembly located within the WGO chamber. The ATR assembly has an inlet means and an outlet means for process gases flowing therethrough and a catalyst bed which is intermediate the inlet and outlet means. At least a part of the inlet means of the ATR assembly is located in the flow path of the WGO chamber to facilitate the transfer of thermal energy.
Abstract:
A horizontal multiple-chamber, packed column structure for adsorptive separation process wherein loading and unloading of packing material is facilitated, and efficient, effective contact between the packing material and a fluid passing therethrough is provided by the configuration and placement of a fluid inlet and distributor at one end thereof and fluid collector and fluid outlet at the horizontally opposite end, each chamber also including a plurality of axially extending rods to maintain a relatively uniform packing density of packing material in the chamber.
