    Abstract: Provided herein are roadways containing polyurethane materials. A roadway includes a base layer of a compacted in situ material and/or a wear layer disposed on the base layer. One or both of these layers may include the polyurethane material to bind other components in the layers and to form more robust and durable roadway structures capable of withstanding operating loads of the roadway. In some embodiments, the polyurethane material is added to the wear layer by mixing in situ soil and/or foreign aggregate with polyurethane material or by dispensing the polyurethane material over the existing partially formed wear layer. The base layer may or may not include a polyurethane material. The type, concentration, distribution, and processing of the polyurethane material in the wear layer may be the same or different than that in the base layer.

    Abstract: A luminescent compound, comprising a phosphor group or groups and an alkylalkoxysilane, and a luminescent composition comprising such luminescent compound and a radioactive substance to provide a source of exciting radiation for the luminescent compound in the composition. The present invention further comprises a method for rendering siliceous surfaces luminescent comprising applying the compound or composition to the surface and reacting the compound or composition with water after the compound or composition has migrated into the surface to hydrolyze the compound or composition. The present invention further comprises a luminescent structure having a siliceous surface incorporating the products of the reaction between the surface, water and the compound or composition of the present invention.

    Abstract: It is known to make synthetic roadstone by sintering together hard particles of e.g., chrome residue together with a finely pulverised calcareous or siliceous binder. The invention proposes forming a coated roadstone comprising a granular substrate of e.g., granite having a sintered coating of hard particles of e.g., chrome residue. The invention has the advantage of reducing the more expensive synthetic portion of the stone to provide a cheaper roadstone which nevertheless has substantially the same wear resistance characteristics.

    Abstract: This invention relates to a porous pavement for parking spaces, roadways, or streets, airfield runways and the like and it provides a porous pavement for such surfaces which allows water to pass through at a high absorption rate, thereby reducing water run-off and reducing flooding, and also allows pollutants to pass through the pavement to the sub-soil, reducing to a great extent the run-off of polluted water to lakes, rivers, bays and oceans. The invention comprises a paving admixture of aggregate, cement and a liquid adhesive mixture to ensure a firm pavement surface and at the same time providing voids or openings between the aggregates in the material to allow water to percolate therethrough.
