Abstract: A system and method for adjusting a drivetrain comprising an e-axle on a vehicle comprises accessing route data and compressing the route data into a plurality of linearized segments. Each segment is determined by analyzing points along the route to determine when a set of route data points indicates an uphill, downhill, or flat segment. Using the segments, drivetrain configuration information for a vehicle and a weight of the vehicle, embodiments determine a performance plan that is tailored to the vehicle, including raising the e-axle to reduce rolling resistance on some segments and lowering the e-axle for some segments for increased power for acceleration, improved braking, or increased regenerative capabilities.

Abstract: A drive train for installation in a vehicle chassis includes a power source, two motor/generators (M/Gs), an array of batteries, and a control system for configuring the drive train to operate using only the power source, only the batteries or a combination of the power source and batteries. The control system may open or close clutches to configure the drive train with each M/G working as a motor or a generator. A M/G working as a motor may use power from the batteries to supply rotational power to drive the vehicle or operate accessories on the vehicle. A M/G working as a generator coupled to a power source generates electric power for charging the array of batteries. The vehicle, including components and subsystems, may be powered electrically from the batteries or powered from the engine.

Abstract: Systems and methods of preparing a vehicle for operation in a geographic zone having an operational requirement are disclosed that include determining a route for the vehicle, determining whether a geographic zone having an operational requirement exists on the route, and determining a powertrain configuration that includes a minimum state of charge (SoC) for a battery system of the vehicle based on the route data, the vehicle data, and/or the external data. The minimum SoC ensures that the vehicle can travel through the geographic zone while complying with the operational requirement. The systems and methods disclosed herein also include identifying a preparation zone for each geographic zone having an operational requirement and operating the vehicle through the preparation zone to ensure the battery system achieves the minimum SoC prior to entering the geographic zone having the operational requirement.

Abstract: Systems and methods of providing a heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and electrical power generation (HVAC-P) system are disclosed. The HVAC-P includes at least one generator, an optional battery system, and a system controller. The HVAC-P system is operable to generate and supply heating, cooling, and electrical power to a building (residential and/or commercial), camping trailer, recreational vehicle, or other habitable structure in which the HVAC-P system is installed. In the heating mode, the generator burns one or more fuels to generate and supply a heated airflow to the building, camping trailer, recreational vehicle, or other habitable structure and electrical power to the battery system, the building, the electrical grid, another generator, or a combination thereof. In the cooling mode, the generator operates on electrical power provided by the battery system, the electrical grid, another generator, or a combination thereof to generate and supply a cooled airflow to the building, camping trailer, recreational vehicle, or other habitable structure.

Abstract: A multi-fuel system and a method for supplying one or more fuels to an engine in a vehicle having a multi-fuel system are disclosed. Embodiments may determine a quantity of fuel added to one or more tanks, determine energy content and a mass property for each fuel stored in the tanks and supply one or more fuels from the tanks to achieve an operating parameter of the vehicle. The selection of a single fuel or a mixture of two or more fuels for a segment may be based on cost and/or characteristics related to emissions or power.

Abstract: A battery pack for an electric vehicle or a hybrid vehicle may include a housing, a stack of battery cells disposed within the housing, and a cooling subassembly. The housing typically holds the cell stack together, and the cooling subassembly typically cools the cell stack to prevent damage to the battery cells and to maintain the performance of the battery cells. The cooling subassembly may include a cold plate defining a liquid flow channel and one or more thermoelectric devices (TEDs) that are operable to cool the cell stack when current is supplied thereto. Heat spreaders may be employed within the battery pack, and exemplary configurations of components to thermally and mechanically couple the cooling subassembly are described.

Abstract: A through the road (TTR) hybridization strategy is proposed to facilitate introduction of hybrid electric vehicle technology in a significant portion of current and expected trucking fleets. In some cases, the technologies can be retrofitted onto an existing vehicle (e.g., a trailer, a tractor-trailer configuration, etc.). In some cases, the technologies can be built into new vehicles. In some cases, one vehicle may be built or retrofitted to operate in tandem with another and provide the hybridization benefits contemplated herein. By supplementing motive forces delivered through a primary drivetrain and fuel-fed engine with supplemental torque delivered at one or more electrically-powered drive axles, improvements in overall fuel efficiency and performance may be delivered, typically without significant redesign of existing components and systems that have been proven in the trucking industry.
