    摘要: An isolated TGF-&bgr; supergene family (TSF) receptor polypeptide is provided. This polypeptide preferably is an inhibin/activin receptor polypeptide and has at least 75% sequence identity with the mature human inhibin/activin receptor sequence. Also provided is a method for purifying TGF-&bgr; supergene family members such as inhibin or activin using the polypeptide, and a method for screening for compounds with TGF-&bgr; supergene family member activity by contacting the compound with the polypeptide and detecting if binding has occurred and the compound is active.

    摘要: The present invention provides cell arrays comprising a plurality of tubes containing populations of cells that are immobilized therein. The arrays are particularly useful for conducting comparative cell-based analyses. Specifically, the subject arrays allow protein-protein interactions to be studied in multiple types of cell simultaneously. The arrays also support simultaneous detection of the differential expression of a target polynucleotide in a multiplicity of cell types derived from multiple subjects. The subject arrays further permit high throughput screening for candidate modulators of a signal transduction pathway of interest. Further provided by the invention are kits, computer-implemented methods and systems for conducting the comparative cell-based analyses.

    摘要: A method for enhancing the survival and/or proliferation of Schwann cells (especially human Schwann cells) in cell culture is disclosed which involves culturing the cells in serum free culture medium comprising gas6 and other mitogenic agents, such as heregulin and forskolin. The culturing step is generally preceded by a pre-incubation period wherein nerve tissue comprising the Schwann cells is cultured under appropriate conditions and for a period of time such that demyelination occurs. The isolated Schwann cells can be used as cellular prostheses to treat patients with nervous system injuries. The invention also provides a cell culture medium for culturing Schwann cells.

Accordingly, the present invention provides a method of activating the Rse receptor by exposing a cell comprising the Rse receptor to exogenous gas6 polypeptide. Moreover, the present invention is directed to a method for enhancing the survival, proliferation or differentiation of a cell comprising a Rse receptor by exposing the cell to exogenous gas6 polypeptide. The types of cells which can be treated according to the method include glial cells such as Schwann cells.

    摘要: A novel bronchial or bronchiolar epithelial cell from normal neonatal rat lung has been isolated, established and maintained for multiple passages in the absence of serum, without undergoing crisis or senescence. By careful manipulation of the nutritional/hormonal microenvironment we have been able to select, from a heterogeneous population, a single epithelial cell type which can maintain highly differentiated features in vitro. This cell type has characteristics of bronchiolar epithelial cells. A clonal line, RL-65, has been selected and observed for more than 2 years in continuous culture. It has been characterized by ultrastructural, morphological and biochemical criteria.
