    Abstract: An improved internal combustion engine of the type having a relatively high surface to volume ratio. An exemplary embodiment depicts the invention in a rotary engine having a rotor within a combustion chamber. The surfaces of the rotor that are exposed to the gases of combustion are provided with a plurality of pockets. Within each pocket is a heat insulating medium. The pockets are covered by a plurality of individual covers, one for each pocket. Heat flow to the rotor is thereby reduced to increase engine operating efficiency.

    Abstract: An improved bearing construction for a mechanism including a shaft and a relatively rotatable member having an opening receiving the shaft with a cylindrical bearing carried by the member and journalling the shaft, the mechanism being of the type adapted to be loaded generally radially of the shaft. The improved bearing construction contemplates that the opening be elongated in a direction transverse to the direction of loading, that the exterior surface of the bearing is grooved to increase its elasticity, and that there be a thin layer of elastomer interposed between the bearing and the opening to compensate for distortion in the bearing due to dynamic loading.

    Abstract: Structure providing improved cooling of the rotor of a rotary engine. The cooling structure includes flow passages for passing a portion of the bearing lubricant through the apices of the rotor. Radially extending portions of the flow passages may be provided in the end walls of the rotor. Delivery of the bearing lubricant to the rotor flow passages may be at one end of the bearing or at a mid-portion of the bearing as desired. The flow passages may include passages in the apices of the rotor extending between the end walls thereof and communicating at their opposite ends with radial passages in the end walls. In one form, the passages in the apices communicate at one end with a radial passage to a rotor cavity having an axial passage therefrom through the end wall at that end.

    Abstract: An improved rotary mechanism of the type having elongated seals for sealing the interface between a housing and a rotor mounted for movement therein, the seals being of the type which sealingly engage a relatively movable surface moving in a direction substantially longitudinally of the seals. The seals are provided with a plurality of recesses on both sides of the sealing surface along the length thereof, with the recesses on one side being staggered with respect to the recesses on the other. The sum of the width of adjacent recesses on opposite sides is substantially equal to or greater than the width of the sealing surface of the seal if the recesses were not present.

Steam enters the bed, which is maintained at about 1800.degree. F., through the outer perforated wall and fluidizes the particles. The steam reacts endothermically with the carbon to produce reaction product gas which exits the bed, together with unreacted steam, through the inner perforated wall. In a preferred form of the invention the bed is maintained at approximately 1800.degree. F. by combining a rotating fluidized bed combustor with the gasifier. In this embodiment compressed air and powdered coal enter the bed with the steam through the outer perforated wall. The air reacts exothermically with the fuel within the bed to generate heat for the endothermic steam-carbon reaction and to produce hot combustion gas which exit the bed, together with the reaction product gas, unreacted steam and compressed air, through the inner perforated wall.
