Apparatus for transmitting torque from the output shaft of the engine to the input shaft of the variable-speed transmission in a motor vehicle has a primary flywheel which is connectable to the output shaft, a secondary flywheel which is connectable to the input shaft by engaging a friction clutch, and one or more dampers which oppose rotation of the flywheels relative to each other. The flywheels define an annular chamber for the damper or dampers, and such chamber surrounds two closely adjacent portions of the flywheels which define a radially extending clearance for the flow of cooling air. The radially inner portion of the chamber is separated from the clearance by an annular seal which is located at most midway between the radially innermost and radially outermost portions of an annular friction surface on the secondary flywheel. Such friction surface is adjacent one friction lining of a clutch plate forming part of the friction clutch and being connectable to the input shaft of the transmission. An antifriction bearing is installed between the flywheels radially inwardly of the clearance.

The levers can be tilted with reference to the rotary housing of the multiple clutch assembly by the pistons of hydraulic cylinder and piston units. One of the cylinder and piston units is at least partially confined in the other cylinder and piston unit. One of the clutches is a starter clutch, and both clutches are actuated during changes of gear ratio for power shifting. One of the levers can be installed so that it tends to engage the respective clutch, or both levers can be installed in such a way that they tend to disengage the respective clutches.

At least one antifriction bearing is installed between the two flywheels with some freedom of axial movement between its races. The races are stressed axially relative to each other in one direction in the engaged condition and in the opposite direction in response to a change in the condition of the clutch. The second flywheel is permanently biased toward or away from the first flywheel, depending upon the type of the clutch, and the disengagement of the clutch results in axial movement of the second flywheel relative to the first flywheel with attendant reduction of friction between the two flywheels in the engaged condition of the clutch.

A propulsion system for use in automotive vehicles wherein the flywheel is connectable with the crankshaft of the internal combustion engine by a first clutch and with the input shaft of the change-speed transmission by a second clutch. When the engine would be idling (such as during stoppage of the vehicle at an intersection) or running unnecessarily for another reason (such as during coasting of the vehicle), the two clutches are disengaged and the flywheel rotates by inertia to restart the engine, when necessary, in response to engagement of the first clutch. If the RPM of the flywheel reaches a preselected lower threshold value, a starter-generator unit automatically accelerates the flywheel so that its RPM rises above the threshold value and is thus sufficient to ensure that the engine is restarted on engagement of the first clutch. The starter-generator unit has a rotor which is mounted directly on the flywheel and a stator which surrounds the rotor with minimal clearance and is connected directly to the housing of the engine. The generator of the starter-generator unit is a heteropolar Schmidt-Lorenz generator.
