    摘要: A family of selectively absorbable/biodegradable, fibrous composite constructs includes different combinations of biostable and absorbable/biodegradable yarns assembled as initially interdependent, load-bearing components, transitioning to exhibit independent functional properties during in vivo end-use. The family of constructs consists of two groups, one group is made of fiber-reinforced composites of high compliance, absorbable matrices of segmented polyaxial copolyesters reinforced with multifilament yarn constructs, which are combinations of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene fibers and at least one absorbable/biodegradable fiber selected from silk fibers and multifilament yarns made from linear segmented, l-lactide copolyesters and poly (3-hydroxyalkanoates, are useful in orthopedic, maxillofacial, urological, vascular, hernial repair and tissue engineering applications. The second group is made of coated and uncoated, warp-knitted mesh constructs for use in hernial, vascular, and urological tissue repair and tissue engineering.

    摘要: The present invention is directed to an absorbable, conformable composite preform for use in making a solid bone filler which is an absorbable mixture of oppositely charged, solid microparticulate polyelectrolytes encased in a sealed, flexible, absorbable copolyester fabric construct and is capable of undergoing solidification to a solid, integral mass having a modulus of more than about 0.5 GPa upon contact with an aqueous medium. In an alternative embodiment the absorbable copolyester fabric construct is filled with a mixture of a microparticulate zincophosphate glass or glass-ceramic and at least one material carrying both acidic and basic groups on the same molecule.

    摘要: The present invention is directed to surface functionalized fabrics, particularly those based on non-woven polypropylene, wherein the functional groups are capable of binding antimicrobial agents through ionic conjugation to control their release and prolong their antimicrobial activity. The invention also deals with Nylon 6 fabric that is complexed with iodine to control its release and to achieve prolonged antimicrobial activities. Similarly, polypropylene and cellulosic fabrics grafted with N-vinylpyrrolidone are disclosed. The N-vinylpyrrolidone can also complex with iodine to control its release and provide antimicrobial activity over desired periods of time.

    摘要: The invention relates to a process of chemically modifying soy protein to produce a thermoplastic material. An aqueous alkaline solution of soy protein is mixed with an organic solution of an alkyl or alkenyl succinic anhydride to acylate the protein's amine and hydroxyl groups. The acylated proteins behave as materials capable of forming films with controlled water solubility water vapor permeability. Useful acylating agents include octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA), dodecenyl succinic anhydride (DDSA), and octadecenyl succinic anhydride (ODSA).

    摘要: Organic inherently conductive polymers, such as those based on polyaniline, polypyrrole and polythiophene, are formed in-situ onto polymeric surfaces that are chemically activated to bond ionically the conductive polymers to the substrates. The polymeric substrate is preferably a preshaped or preformed thermoplastic film, fabric, or tube, although other forms of thermoplastic and thermoset polymers can be used as the substrates for pretreatment using, most preferably, phosphonylation-based processes followed by exposure to an oxidatively polymerizable compound capable of forming an electrically conductive polymer. The resultant conductive surface imparts unique properties to the substrates and allows their use in antistatic clothing, surface conducting films for electronic components and the like, and electromagnetic interference shielding. In an alternative embodiment, metals such as gold or platinum are bonded to the chemically interactive surface of a preshaped thermoplastic or thermoset article.
