    摘要: An improved spinal fixation system is provided for human implantation, including a set of screws with interconnecting rods for implantation into the pedicle and between two adjacent vertebrae or a plate with screws for fixating two adjacent vertebrae. The screws, rods, and plates include a substrate portion of high strength biocompatible material and a controlled porosity analogous to natural bone. The substrate portion may be coated with a bio-active surface coating material such as hydroxyapatite or a calcium phosphate to promote bone ingrowth and enhanced bone fusion. Upon implantation, the fixation system provides a desired combination of mechanical strength together with osteoconductivity and bio-activity to promote bone ingrowth and fusion, as well as radiolucency for facilitated post-operative monitoring. The fixation system may additionally carry one or more natural or synthetic therapeutic agents for further promoting bone ingrowth and fusion.

    摘要: A spinal implant is inserted between adjacent vertebrae to function as an disk prosthesis. The prosthesis has two plates fastened to adjacent vertebrae facing each other. The facing sides of the plates each have a depending skirt formed as concentric arcs of about 90 degrees. The skirts are either bowed or tapered in the axial direction. A protrusion is centrally located between the arcs on one plate and a depression is centrally located between the arcs of the other plate. The plates are oriented to each other with the concentric arcs of each interrupted skirt at 90 degrees and the protrusion is engaged in the depression. The plates are then rotated about 90 degrees and the opposed arcs of one plate interlock with the opposed arcs of the other plate to prevent separation in the axial direction.

    摘要: An osteoprosthesis component which is suitable for fitting to the end of a first bone which has been resected, in a joint between that bone and a second bone, includes a transverse portion which can be fitted across the resected end of the first bone. The transverse portion has a planar first surface which faces the resected end of the first bone when the component is implanted and a second surface for engaging the second bone directly or indirectly. The component includes a rail portion around at least part of the periphery of the component extending in a direction away from the second bone, in which the inwardly facing surface of the rail portion is generally rounded extending continuously from the planar first surface of the transverse portion when the component is viewed in cross-section.
