摘要： A method of multi-channel magnetic tape recording and reading that compensates for track pitch changes. The method utilizes a closed loop servo system to adjust lateral and azimuth position of the recording head assembly. Servo information is written at a slight azimuth angle, adjacent the outer most tracks of a band of tracks. The recording angle being based on a dimensional stability coefficient of the tape. After data is written at the initial angle, the azimuth angle of the head is rotated through a predetermined range of angle during read-only to align the outermost read gaps with the servo tracks. By doing so, signal strength is maximized across all tracks, even if track pitch changes.

摘要： In serpentine recording on magnetic tape (32), a warning marker (CEW) is generated and recorded on tape in a write mode and is read in a read mode. The warning marker indicates that a head is approaching a boundary position on the tape at which the head must change tracks in order to continue recording or reading frames. The warning marker is preferably included in an auxiliary portion of at least some frames. In one embodiment, the warning marker has a value related to a number of frames that can yet be recorded on the track before the boundary position is encountered. Monitoring of the warning marker serves to apprise the drive of a potential need to cache data in anticipation of a change of track. Caching of data can occur either by sending a caching signal to the host, or can occur internally in the drive without taxing the drive's buffer. In the drive-internal caching, the relative speed between the tape and the head is adjusted in anticipation of the head being repositioned for a change of track.

摘要： A tape drive having a protection barrier to keep improperly inserted tape cartridges from damaging the read/write head. In a first embodiment of the invention, a short protection wall is positioned in front of the read/write head. This protection wall prevents a tape cartridge inserted sideways into the tape drive from contacting the read/write head. The protection wall also prevents a partially opened cartridge door from striking the read/write head. In a second and third embodiment of the invention, one or more protection pins are used to protect the read/write head. These protection pins also keep a cartridge inserted sideways into the tape drive or a cartridge door partially opened from striking the read/write head.

摘要： A recording or reproducing apparatus according to the present invention includes a loading member movable between an unloading position at which a tape is accommodated into a cassette and a loading position at which the tape is pulled out from the cassette and wrapped around a rotary head drum to enable recording or reproduction, a detecting circuit for causing the rotary head drum to start rotating when the loading member is located at a predetermined position between the unloading and loading positions and the tape is wrapped around the rotary head drum by a predetermined angle, and detecting a rotational speed which the rotary head drum reaches within a predetermined time, and a control circuit for driving the loading member to the loading position if it is determined that the rotary head drum is not wet with dew condensation from the rotational speed of the rotary head drum detected by the detecting circuit, and if it is determined that the rotary head drum is wet with dew condensation, driving the loading member to the unloading position.

The drive-implemented method further includes receiving a write request after the unthreading, rethreading the tape, and writing data corresponding to the write request on the tape. The index stored on the tape prior to the unthreading is overwritten with the data corresponding to the write request.
