In an Add-Compare-Select (ACS) unit, a select-control signal is produced by Boolean operations on comparator decision signals and used to control a multiplexer structure. The comparator decision signals can be generated in parallel by an array of comparators comparing all possible pairs of a set of state metrics values. The Boolean operations are predefined through Boolean algebra that uses the decision signals as variables and complies with restriction imposed by the selection criteria, e.g., to select an minimum or maximum value of the set of state metrics values. The Boolean operations are performed by a logic module implemented using basic logic gates, such as AND, OR and NOT. As a result, the multiplexer structure that receives the set of input values can output the optimum value responsive to the select control signal.

A method and a communication receiver have been described for calculating log-likelihood ratios in a communication receiver. The log-likelihood ratio is calculated for each bit of one or more subsymbols of each of the one or more spatial streams by computing effective noise on one or more spatial streams after considering noise terms resulting from MIMO detection estimates of the subsymbols on each spatial stream. Finally, signal to noise ratio is determined for one or more spatial streams from the effective noise and scaling bit log-likelihood ratios with the signal to noise ratio.

In a case where a sign bit of an LLR calculated by the LLR calculator conflicts with a hard decision value calculated by the hard decision value calculator, an LLR corrector inverts the sign bit of the LLR and outputs the sign-bit-inverted LLR as a soft decision value to an error correction decoder.

The predefined requirements comprise, for example, a substantially minimum error. In an exemplary bit detection implementation, the target input signal X comprises an observed analog signal and the produced digital stream Y comprises a digitized output of a receive channel corresponding to a transmitted bit stream. In an exemplary bit stream generation implementation, the target input signal X comprises a desired transmit signal and the produced digital stream Y comprises an estimate of the desired transmit signal.

A receiver receives the transmitted signal and recovers information bits using a blind equalization technique and by equalizing the 2-subcarriers OFDM signal as a 9-QAM signal in time domain with a CMMA (constant multi modulus algorithm) equalization method.
