A novel coating for medical devices provides nitric oxide delivery using nanofibers of linear poly(ethylenimine)diazeniumdiolate. Linear poly(ethylenimine)diazeniumdiolate releases nitric oxide (NO) in a controlled manner to tissues and organs to aid the healing process and to prevent injury to tissues at risk of injury. Electrospun nano-fibers of linear poly(ethylenimine) diazeniumdiolate deliver therapeutic levels of NO to the tissues surrounding a medical device while minimizing the alteration of the properties of the device. A nanofiber coating, because of the small size and large surface area per unit mass of the nanofibers, provides a much larger surface area per unit mass while minimizing changes in other properties of the device.

A high strength abrasion resistant surgical suture material with improved tie down characteristics and enhanced tissue remodeling and biocompatibility includes protein polymer fibers blended with synthetic fibers. The suture features a multifilament cover formed of strands of ultra high molecular weight long chain polyethylene braided with polyester, nylon or other nonabsorbable materials, along with fibers of a protein polymer, such as collagen. The cover surrounds a core formed of twisted strands of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene. The core also can include collagen fibers. The suture, provided in a #2 size, has the strength of #5 Ethibond, is ideally suited for most orthopedic procedures, and can be attached to a suture anchor or a curved needle. The collagen fiber enhances tissue remodeling into the suture strand, thus improving biocompatibility.

The present invention can provide a coded surgical suture, which is capable of affording a visual identification effect for determining the direction or end portions of the surgical suture. The surgical suture can have an elongated body member having first and second end portions. A coding member can be provided on one of the two end portions of the body member to afford a visual identification effect. In an exemplary embodiment, the coding member can have a color element. The present invention can also provide a coding system for identifying the direction or the end portions of a surgical suture or for distinguishing between different surgical sutures.

A suture having a coating thereon of an ethylene-propylene copolymer, and a method of coating a suture which comprises the steps of coating the surface of the suture with an effective amount of a solution of ethylene-propylene copolymer in an organic solvent, and then removing the solvent from the coated suture. The copolymer preferably has an average molecular weight of from about 25,000 to about 500,000 g/mole, and a mole percentage of about 55 to 70 percent ethylene and about 30 to 45 percent propylene. The coating provides an alternative to silicone, which has previously been used as a coating for sutures, and exhibits excellent performance properties, such as tactile smoothness, pliability, and knot tiedown performance.

The composition comprises a solution of hyaluronic acid, a salt thereof or mixtures thereof having a molecular weight of from about 50,000 to less than about 500,000 and having a concentration of from about 0.01 to about 15% by weight.
