Abstract: Surgical instruments and assemblies for sealing and cutting tissue monitor jaw angle and/or jaw clamping force to provide feedback to an operator of the surgical instrument indicative of whether the tissue is suitable clamped for sealing and/or cutting. A surgical instrument or assembly includes a jaw operable to clamp tissue, a sealing mechanism, a cutting mechanism, an actuation monitoring assembly, and a feedback assembly. The actuation monitoring assembly monitors jaw angle and/or clamping force. The feedback assembly outputs feedback to the operator, based on the jaw angle and/or clamping force, as to whether the current clamping angle and/or jaw angle is suitable for sealing and/or clamping tissue.

Abstract: A medical system comprises a catheter containing a mechanical system that is remotely operable to control a distal tip of the catheter. The medical system also comprises a sensor configured to at least partly measure a pose of the distal tip and a control system coupled to the mechanical system. The control system includes a memory operable to store parameters of a working configuration of the distal tip of the catheter and a plurality of operating modes including a holding mode in which the control system operates the mechanical system to actively maintain the working configuration of the distal tip based on feedback from the sensor. The control system also includes a plurality of modules. During activation of the holding mode, the plurality of modules is configured to sense a current pose of the distal tip and determine a difference between the current pose and the working configuration. The difference is due to an external disturbance. Without user input, the plurality of modules is also configured to operate the mechanical system to move the catheter to minimize the difference between the current pose and the working configuration.

Abstract: Medical and/or robotic devices, systems and methods can provide an indicator associated with each manipulator assembly of a multi-arm telerobotic or telesurgical system. The exemplary indicator comprises a multi-color light emitting diode (LED) mounted to a manipulator moving an associated surgical instrument, allowing the indicator to display any of a wide variety of signals. The invention may provide an additional user interface to facilitate communications between the telesurgical system and/or members of a telesurgical team.

Abstract: A surgical instrument includes a proximal control mechanism having an instrument control surface. The instrument control surface has two openings through which two resilient latch arms can be inserted to engage a fixed latch structure contained within the proximal control mechanism. The fixed latch structure provides two lead-in ramps that force the resilient latch arms onto locking surfaces. The resilient latch arms are contained entirely within the proximal control mechanism when engaged. Inward forces can be applied to two buttons to apply an outward force on the resilient latch arms and release them from the locking surfaces of the fixed latch structure. Each of the two buttons is accessible from one of two opposite outside surfaces of the proximal control mechanism.

Abstract: Systems and methods for instrument disturbance compensation include a computer-assisted device. The computer-assisted device includes an articulated arm having a plurality of joints and a control unit coupled to the articulated arm. The control unit is configured to detect a disturbance to the articulated arm caused by a release of one or more brakes of the plurality of joints and maintain a position of a point of interest associated with the articulated arm by compensating for the disturbance using one or more joints of the plurality of joints. In some embodiments, the point of interest is a tip of an end effector of the articulated arm. In some embodiments, the control unit is configured to determine a predicted motion for the point of interest based on the disturbance and send a drive command to move the point of interest in a direction opposite to the predicted motion.

Abstract: A surgical system including a cartridge having a first tissue sealing electrode and a surgical instrument including a first jaw and a second jaw, wherein the first jaw comprises a second tissue sealing electrode facing the second jaw, and wherein the second jaw is configured to removably receive the cartridge in a position where the first tissue sealing electrode is opposite the second tissue sealing electrode. The surgical system further includes a cut and seal controller, wherein the cut and seal controller automatically generates a command to the surgical instrument to reduce a clamping force between the first and the second jaws after sensing that tissue sealing is complete.

Abstract: A method of planning a procedure to deploy an interventional instrument comprises receiving a model of an anatomic structure. The anatomic structure includes a plurality of passageways. The method further includes identifying a target structure in the model and receiving information about an operational capability of the interventional instrument within the plurality of passageways. The method further comprises identifying a planned deployment location for positioning a distal tip of the interventional instrument to perform the procedure on the target structure based upon the operational capability of the interventional instrument.
