An automotive tufted carpet with improved acoustic properties is formed with a two-part primary backing. The first backing layer is formed of a woven or non-woven material, and the second backing layer is formed of a microfilament spunlaced material possessing sound absorbing acoustic properties. The first backing layer and second backing layer are thermobonded together with an adhesive web positioned therebetween to form the two-part primary backing. Tufts of yarn are then sewn through the two-part primary backing. The resulting acoustically enhanced automotive tufted carpet may be backcoated or precoated, and may have a secondary backing adhered thereto as a matter of choice.

It is preferable that powder of particle size of 90 to 10,000 nullm is scattered in the amount of 5 to 500 g/m2.

A carpet material for a floor carpet to be used in a passenger compartment of an automotive vehicle. The carpet material comprises a pile layer formed of nonwoven fabric and serving as a skin. A base fabric layer is provided for supporting the pile layer and is formed of nonwoven fabric and integral with the pile layer. A backing layer is located at the opposite side of the base fabric with respect to the pile layer. The backing layer is formed of nonwoven fabric and integral with the base fabric layer. The nonwoven fabric forming the backing layer has a surface density ranging from 100 to 1000 g/m2 and is formed of polyester-based fiber having a diameter ranging from 20 to 130 &mgr;m.

Thermoplastic compositions are disclosed which are useful as backings for automotive carpets. The thermoplastic compositions contain a high filler content of at least 60 percent by weight, about 5 to 25 percent by weight of an ethylene homopolymer or copolymer, about 1 to 10 percent by weight of a non-vulcanized elastomeric resin and about 1 to 15 percent by weight of a plasticizer. Preferably a low viscosity precoat of polyethylene or ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer is applied to the carpet prior to the application of the thermoplastic backing. The backed automotive carpet is moldable, withstands both high and low temperatures, possesses outstanding sound absorbing properties and can be produced economically.
